Frame your degree for specialty occupation
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the role. A communications, PR, or organizational behavior degree maps cleanly. An unrelated degree needs a written explanation tying your coursework to internal communications work.
Search LCA filings by occupation code
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up LCA filings under SOC code 11-2011 (Advertising and Promotions Managers) or 11-2031 (Public Relations Managers). Employers who filed recently for those codes are already comfortable sponsoring this role.
Target companies with in-house legal or HR teams
Internal Communications Manager roles are almost exclusively found at companies large enough to have structured HR functions. Those same companies typically have immigration counsel on retainer, which shortens the time between offer and I-129 filing.
Verify the prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the Level I through Level IV wage for your metro area before your offer conversation. Your employer's LCA must certify at least the prevailing wage, so knowing the floor protects you if the initial offer comes in below it.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
Search Internal Communications Manager roles on Migrate Mate to filter for employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history in this occupation. That filters out postings where sponsorship is listed as possible but never actually filed.
Clarify filing timing during the offer stage
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed for an October 1 start date. If you're receiving an offer outside the March registration window, ask whether the employer will file for cap-exempt status or bridge you on OPT cap-gap while waiting for the next cycle.

Find Internal Communications Manager JobsInternal Communications Manager H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Internal Communications Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the employer requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as communications, journalism, public relations, or organizational behavior. Roles where any degree is accepted regardless of field are harder to defend as specialty occupations. Employers strengthen the case by documenting degree requirements in the job description and LCA before filing.
Which employers typically sponsor H-1B visas for internal communications roles?
Large corporations, tech companies, financial institutions, and healthcare systems file the most LCAs for communications management roles because they have dedicated internal comms functions and established immigration programs. Mid-size companies with in-house HR teams also sponsor, but less consistently. You can check which employers have filed for this occupation using Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL LCA filing history by role.
Can an Internal Communications Manager be classified under a specific SOC code for the LCA?
Most employers file under SOC 11-2031 (Public Relations and Fundraising Managers) or 11-2011 (Advertising and Promotions Managers), depending on how the role is structured. The SOC code affects the prevailing wage tier the employer must certify. If the job description emphasizes employee engagement and change management, some employers use management analyst codes, which can affect the wage floor.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm laid off from an Internal Communications Manager role?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new sponsor, change status, or depart the U.S. If a new employer files an H-1B transfer petition within that window, you can begin working once USCIS receives the petition. The grace period does not reset if you find a new role quickly, so starting the transfer process immediately matters.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect my timeline for starting an internal communications job?
Cap-subject H-1B petitions have a single annual registration window in March, with an October 1 start date if selected. If you're on OPT when the offer comes in, cap-gap provisions may extend your authorization through September 30 of the lottery year. Employers who are universities, nonprofits affiliated with universities, or government research organizations are cap-exempt and can file year-round.
