H-1B Visa American Sign Language Interpreter Jobs
American Sign Language Interpreter roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree in interpretation, linguistics, or a related field. Employers in education, healthcare, and government agencies actively file LCAs with the DOL, making this one of the more accessible paths to H-1B status for credentialed interpreters.

Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree to directly relate to ASL interpretation. A degree in linguistics, deaf studies, or interpreting strengthens your case. A general communications degree may trigger an RFE, so gather any supplemental coursework or credential documentation now.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter ASL Interpreter roles by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for this occupation. LCA history signals the employer already understands the H-1B process and won't stall at the filing stage.
Get your RID certification before applying
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf certification isn't legally required for H-1B, but it signals professional-level qualification to both employers and USCIS adjudicators evaluating specialty occupation claims. Educational institutions and hospitals often list it as a hiring requirement.
Confirm the employer's wage offer meets prevailing wage
Before accepting an offer, cross-check the proposed salary against the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 27-3091 in your work location. Your employer must certify this wage on the LCA, and offers below the DOL threshold will delay or block the filing.
Ask about cap-exempt employer status early
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated healthcare systems are cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B petition bypasses the annual lottery. Clarify whether a prospective employer holds cap-exempt status during screening calls, not after an offer is extended.

Find American Sign Language Interpreter JobsAmerican Sign Language Interpreter H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does American Sign Language Interpreter qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B?
Yes, ASL Interpreter qualifies as a specialty occupation when the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in interpretation, linguistics, or deaf studies. USCIS evaluates whether the degree requirement is standard for the position in the industry. Roles in K-12 education or community freelance settings can face more scrutiny than hospital or university interpreter positions, which consistently require degree-level credentials.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for ASL Interpreters?
Hospitals, universities, federal agencies, and state rehabilitation programs are the most consistent sponsors for ASL Interpreter H-1B petitions. Universities and nonprofit hospitals are often cap-exempt, which means they can file year-round without the lottery. You can browse ASL Interpreter roles filtered by sponsoring employer type on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B lottery affect ASL Interpreters applying through for-profit employers?
For-profit employers are subject to the annual H-1B cap of 65,000 regular-cap slots plus 20,000 for U.S. master's degree holders. USCIS runs an electronic registration lottery in March, and selection isn't guaranteed. If you're not selected, cap-exempt employers like universities or nonprofit medical centers offer an alternative path that bypasses the lottery entirely.
What documents should I prepare before an employer files my H-1B petition?
You'll need your official academic transcripts, degree certificate, any professional certifications such as RID or NAD credentials, and a copy of your I-94 if you're already in the U.S. Your employer will need these to complete Form I-129 and the accompanying Labor Condition Application that DOL must certify before USCIS can adjudicate the petition.
Can I work for multiple clients or agencies on an H-1B as an ASL Interpreter?
Your H-1B is tied to the sponsoring employer, not individual clients. If you work through an interpretation agency, that agency is typically your H-1B sponsor and places you on assignments. Working directly for a second employer simultaneously requires a concurrent H-1B petition filed by that second employer. USCIS allows concurrent employment, but both petitions must be independently approved.
