Frame your degree as specialty occupation evidence
USCIS scrutinizes Community Outreach Coordinator petitions because the role can seem generalist. Document how your degree in communications, public health, or social work directly ties to the job duties listed in your offer letter.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Search DOL's LCA disclosure data for employers who have certified outreach or community relations roles. Healthcare systems, federally qualified health centers, and university extension programs file LCAs for this title more consistently than other employer types.
Verify your wage offer against OFLC Wage Search
Your employer must pay at least the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Run your own check using OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer to confirm their proposed salary meets the DOL threshold.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Filter for Community Outreach Coordinator roles by employer H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate. This surfaces positions at organizations that have already navigated the LCA and I-129 process for comparable roles, reducing your sponsorship uncertainty.
Prepare for an RFE on specialty occupation status
USCIS frequently issues Requests for Evidence on outreach roles. Gather job postings from competing employers that require a specific bachelor's degree, and ask your employer to document why a general degree won't suffice for your responsibilities.
Confirm cap-exempt status before your 60-day grace period ends
If your current employer is a nonprofit or university, a new offer from a similarly cap-exempt employer lets you transfer without waiting for the October 1 start date. Verify the new employer's tax-exempt status with USCIS before resigning.

Find Community Outreach Coordinator JobsCommunity Outreach Coordinator H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Community Outreach Coordinator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but USCIS evaluates this on a case-by-case basis. The employer must show the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as communications, public health, or social work. Generic outreach roles that accept any degree are more likely to receive a Request for Evidence or denial, so the job description and offer letter need precise, field-specific language.
Which types of employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Community Outreach Coordinator positions?
Healthcare systems, federally qualified health centers, public universities, government contractors, and large nonprofit organizations file LCAs for this role most often. These employers tend to have established HR processes for H-1B sponsorship and are familiar with the DOL prevailing wage requirements tied to outreach and community relations job titles. You can browse sponsoring employers with verified filing history on Migrate Mate.
What SOC code applies to Community Outreach Coordinator roles on the LCA, and why does it matter?
Employers typically file under SOC 11-2031 (Public Relations and Fundraising Managers) or 21-1099 (Community and Social Service Specialists, All Other), depending on the role's primary duties. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage level your employer must certify on the LCA. A misclassified SOC code can create compliance problems, so confirm it matches your actual responsibilities before your employer submits the DOL filing.
Can I switch Community Outreach Coordinator jobs while on H-1B status?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new I-129 petition, provided your current petition has been approved and you've maintained valid status. The new employer must file a new LCA and I-129 before your first day. If both employers are cap-exempt, you avoid any cap registration timing issues entirely.
What O*NET data is useful when building the specialty occupation argument for this role?
The O*NET profile for Community and Social Service occupations documents the education, knowledge, and skill requirements that adjudicators reference. Citing the O*NET classification in your employer's support letter helps establish that the role is degree-dependent and not entry-level or generalist. Your immigration attorney or filing service should cross-reference the O*NET data with the actual job duties to strengthen the specialty occupation argument.
