H-1B Visa Application Support Engineer Jobs
Application Support Engineer roles qualify as H-1B visa specialty occupations when the position requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Employers file a Labor Condition Application with DOL before petitioning USCIS, and most large enterprise software and infrastructure teams sponsor H-1B visa transfers year-round outside the April lottery window.

Align your degree to the role
USCIS scrutinizes whether your specific degree field matches Application Support Engineer duties. A degree in computer science, information systems, or software engineering strengthens your petition. A general business degree with no technical concentration is a common RFE trigger.
Target cap-exempt employers first
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning they can file your H-1B petition any time of year. Application Support Engineer roles exist across hospital systems, university IT departments, and federally funded labs.
Verify prevailing wage before accepting offers
Your offered salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating so you know the floor. Employers who underpay the prevailing wage risk LCA violations that can delay or void your petition.
Search LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter employers by H-1B LCA filing history specific to Application Support Engineer roles on Migrate Mate. This shows which companies have actually sponsored this job title, not just those that say they're open to sponsorship.
Clarify sponsorship scope during the offer stage
Ask explicitly whether the employer covers the I-129 filing fee, attorney fees, and premium processing. Some employers cover government fees but not legal costs. Getting this in writing before you accept prevents disputes after your petition is filed.
Document your support role's technical requirements
Application Support Engineer titles sometimes attract RFEs because officers question whether the role truly requires a degree. Collect job postings, internal job descriptions, and any on-call escalation procedures that demonstrate the theoretical and technical knowledge your position requires.
H-1B Visa Application Support Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Application Support Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, if the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field such as computer science, information systems, or software engineering. USCIS evaluates the actual job duties, not just the title. Roles focused on database management, API troubleshooting, or enterprise application configuration generally meet the specialty occupation standard more clearly than generalist help-desk positions.
How do I find employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas for Application Support Engineers?
Search Migrate Mate to filter companies by verified LCA filing history for this specific role. DOL disclosure data shows which employers have filed Labor Condition Applications for Application Support Engineer positions, giving you a concrete shortlist of sponsors rather than relying on unverified employer claims.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Application Support Engineer role mid-year?
Yes. H-1B transfers are not subject to the annual cap, so your new employer can file a transfer petition any time of year. You can start work as soon as the new employer files the I-129 petition, without waiting for approval, under H-1B portability rules. The new role must still qualify as a specialty occupation.
What happens to my H-1B status if my employer eliminates my Application Support Engineer position?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to either find a new sponsoring employer, change to another visa status, or depart the U.S. During that window, your new employer can file an H-1B transfer and you can begin work once the petition is received by USCIS. Acting quickly matters because the 60-day clock does not pause.
Does the SOC code assigned to my Application Support Engineer role affect my H-1B petition?
It affects your prevailing wage requirement directly. Application Support Engineer roles are typically coded under SOC 15-1232 (Computer User Support Specialists) or 15-1299 (Computer Occupations, All Other), and the prevailing wage floor differs by code and location. You can verify the applicable wage level using the OFLC Wage Search, and reviewing the O*NET profile for your assigned code helps confirm the duties align with your actual work.
