Verify your degree field matches the role
USCIS requires the degree to be in a directly related specialty field, not just any engineering discipline. A degree in industrial technology or mechatronics supports an Automation Technician petition more cleanly than a general business or unrelated science degree.
Use O*NET to frame your job duties
Pull the Automation Technician occupation profile from O*NET and align your resume's duty descriptions with the listed tasks. Petitions that mirror O*NET language make the specialty occupation case easier for USCIS to adjudicate without an RFE.
Search LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Before applying, check which employers have filed Labor Condition Applications for Automation Technician roles using Migrate Mate. Employers with active LCA history have already set prevailing wage levels and are operationally prepared to sponsor.
Check prevailing wages before negotiating offers
Run the OFLC Wage Search for your specific county and SOC code before any salary conversation. Your employer's LCA must certify at least the prevailing wage, so knowing that floor prevents you from inadvertently accepting an offer that can't be legally filed.
Clarify cap-subject status with your employer early
Most Automation Technician roles at private manufacturers are cap-subject, meaning you need to be selected in the April lottery. Confirm this with HR before investing time in the offer process so you're not surprised by a March filing deadline.

Find Automation Technician JobsAutomation Technician H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Automation Technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the position is defined. USCIS requires that the role normally requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field like electrical engineering, mechatronics, or industrial automation. If the job posting accepts any degree or equivalent experience in lieu of a degree, the specialty occupation argument weakens. Employers strengthen the petition by documenting that the role's complexity demands a specific technical discipline.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Automation Technician positions?
Automotive manufacturing, semiconductor fabrication, food and beverage processing, and industrial robotics integrators file the most LCAs for Automation Technician roles. These sectors run continuous production lines that require PLC programming, SCADA systems, and robotics maintenance skills that can't easily be sourced domestically. You can browse verified sponsoring employers by industry on Migrate Mate.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new automation employer mid-year?
Yes, H-1B portability under AC21 allows you to transfer to a new employer once your petition has been pending for 180 days or more, as long as the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. For Automation Technicians, moving between manufacturers or integrators in the same SOC code generally satisfies the similarity requirement. Your new employer files an I-129 transfer petition and you can start working upon receipt.
What happens to my H-1B if my employer closes a facility or eliminates my automation role?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of authorized employment to find a new sponsor, file a change of status, or depart the country. During this window, you can't work. The priority is securing a new employer who will file an H-1B transfer quickly. Any days used during the grace period count against your remaining H-1B time, so acting immediately matters.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect H-1B sponsorship for automation roles?
Your employer must certify in the LCA that your offered wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for your job title, SOC code, and work location. Prevailing wages for Automation Technician roles vary significantly by region and wage level. Use the OFLC Wage Search to find the specific prevailing wage for your county before evaluating any offer, since an employer can't legally file your petition at a wage below that threshold.
