Tips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Certified Industrial Hygienist
Verify your CIH credential supports specialty occupation
USCIS requires your role to need a specific degree, not just any bachelor's. Document how your CIH certification and degree in industrial hygiene or occupational health directly tie to your job duties before your employer files.
Target federal contractors with EHS compliance mandates
Defense and energy contractors must meet OSHA and EPA regulatory requirements, which creates consistent demand for CIH-credentialed staff. These employers file H-1B petitions regularly because qualified domestic candidates are scarce in specialized industrial hygiene roles.
Search LCA filings to find active sponsors
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by LCA filing history for industrial hygiene and occupational health roles. This shows you which companies have already cleared DOL certification for positions like yours, not just which ones say they sponsor.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the applicable DOL level, and mismatches between offered salary and certified wage have delayed filings.
Prepare a degree equivalency letter if your path was nontraditional
If your bachelor's is in chemistry, biology, or environmental science rather than industrial hygiene, a credentials evaluation letter explaining how your degree maps to the specialty helps your employer's attorney build the RFE-resistant I-129 petition.
Start the H-1B process well before your OPT or status expires
Cap-subject H-1B petitions must be filed for an October 1 start date. If your current status expires before then, your employer needs to confirm cap-gap coverage applies or explore bridging through a change of status to maintain work authorization.

Find Certified Industrial Hygienist JobsCertified Industrial Hygienist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Certified Industrial Hygienist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS treats industrial hygiene as a specialty occupation because the role normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in industrial hygiene, occupational health, environmental health, or a closely related field. Having the CIH credential strengthens the petition by demonstrating professional recognition in the field, but the underlying degree requirement is what satisfies the specialty occupation definition.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas for industrial hygienists most often?
Federal contractors in defense, energy, and construction are among the most consistent sponsors because regulatory compliance obligations create sustained demand for CIH-credentialed staff. Large manufacturers, healthcare systems, and environmental consulting firms also sponsor regularly. Use Migrate Mate to search by industry and see which employers have active LCA filings for industrial hygiene or occupational health roles.
Can my employer file the H-1B petition before I earn my CIH certification?
Yes. The H-1B petition is based on the specialty occupation requirement, which is your degree, not the CIH credential. Your employer can file I-129 with your bachelor's degree in a qualifying field as the basis. The CIH certification strengthens the case and supports prevailing wage documentation, but it isn't a USCIS filing requirement.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement work for industrial hygienist roles?
Before filing your H-1B petition, your employer must submit a Labor Condition Application certifying your offered wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for your job title and work location. You can check applicable wage levels using the OFLC Wage Search. The certified wage level depends on your duties, experience, and geography, and it's locked in on the LCA before USCIS ever reviews the petition.
What happens to my H-1B status if I move between industrial hygiene roles or employers?
H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer once they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf, as long as your previous petition was approved and you've been in valid H-1B status. Your new employer must file before you start. The specialty occupation basis carries over as long as the new role still requires a qualifying degree in an industrial hygiene or related field.
