Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
H-1B approval requires your CMA role to demand at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Confirm the job description specifies a degree requirement, not just a certification, before applying. USCIS scrutinizes medical assistant petitions closely on this point.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating salary
Your employer's LCA must certify your offered wage meets the DOL prevailing wage for your location and job zone. Run your title and metro area through the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation so you know the floor.
Target employers enrolled in E-Verify
H-1B sponsors are required to use E-Verify. Academic medical centers, federally qualified health centers, and hospital networks are reliably enrolled. Prioritize these over small independent practices, which are less likely to have existing H-1B infrastructure.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter CMA postings by employers with active LCA filing history in healthcare support occupations. Migrate Mate surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data by employer and role, so you can confirm sponsorship history before you apply.
Clarify SOC code placement with your employer
Certified Medical Assistants can be classified under different Standard Occupational Classification codes depending on duties, which affects your prevailing wage tier. Ask your prospective employer which SOC code they plan to use on the LCA before the petition is filed.
Account for cap-subject timing in your job search
Most CMA employers are cap-subject, meaning your petition enters the annual H-1B lottery with an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, confirm your employer will file during the March registration window and that your OPT doesn't expire before October.
H-1B Visa Certified Medical Assistant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Certified Medical Assistant role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. H-1B requires the role to be a specialty occupation, meaning it normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Some CMA postings specify only a certification or associate degree, which wouldn't meet the threshold. Look for postings that explicitly require a bachelor's in health sciences, medical assisting, or a related clinical field.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for medical assistants?
Academic medical centers, large hospital systems, multi-specialty group practices, and federally qualified health centers are the most consistent sponsors. These organizations have existing immigration infrastructure and legal teams familiar with H-1B filings. Smaller independent clinics rarely sponsor because the cost and administrative burden aren't justified for a single hire. Use Migrate Mate to browse CMA openings filtered by employers with verified H-1B filing history.
How does the H-1B lottery affect a medical assistant job offer?
Unless your employer qualifies as cap-exempt, your petition enters the annual H-1B lottery each March with a start date of October 1. If you're not selected, the offer typically lapses unless the employer is willing to try again the following year. Cap-exempt employers, such as universities and nonprofit research hospitals, can file outside the lottery window at any time of year, which makes them attractive targets if you need faster authorization.
What wage requirements apply to H-1B medical assistant positions?
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application certifying your offered wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for your specific occupation and geographic area. The prevailing wage varies significantly by metro area and the SOC code assigned to your role. You can look up the applicable wage floor using the OFLC Wage Search before your offer negotiation to ensure the compensation offered is LCA-compliant.
Can I stay in H-1B status if my medical assistant contract ends?
You have a 60-day grace period after your H-1B employment ends to find a new sponsoring employer, change to another visa status, or depart the U.S. During that window, you can't legally work, but you can interview and negotiate offers. If a new employer files an H-1B transfer petition before the grace period expires, you can begin working for them immediately upon filing, without waiting for USCIS approval.
