Verify your credentials meet specialty occupation
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree and the CRNA role. A Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia or a Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice satisfies this. Confirm your transcripts clearly show the clinical anesthesia concentration before your employer files.
Target employers with anesthesia group structures
Hospital-employed CRNAs and contracted anesthesia groups both file H-1B petitions, but group practices often have in-house immigration counsel and faster LCA turnaround. Prioritize employers whose staffing model includes a dedicated HR team handling clinical visa filings.
Search H-1B sponsoring CRNA employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by specialty occupation and anesthesia-related SOC codes on Migrate Mate to surface employers with verified H-1B filing history for CRNA roles specifically, not just general nursing. That distinction matters when evaluating whether a hiring manager understands the petition process.
Confirm prevailing wage tier before accepting an offer
Use OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and the employer's county. CRNA wages vary significantly by region, and DOL requires the offered salary to meet or exceed the certified LCA wage before USCIS will approve the petition.
Ask about premium processing during offer negotiation
Standard H-1B processing can take several months. Many CRNA employers elect premium processing to get a 15-business-day adjudication from USCIS. Confirm upfront whether the employer covers this cost, since clinical start dates often depend on a timely approval.
Account for state licensure timing in your H-1B start date
Your H-1B approval authorizes work, but you can't practice anesthesia without a valid state APRN and CRNA license. Some states take 60 to 90 days to process endorsement applications. Coordinate your petition start date with your expected licensure date to avoid an authorized-but-unlicensable gap.

Find Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist JobsCertified Registered Nurse Anesthetist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the CRNA role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS classifies Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist positions as specialty occupations because the role normally requires at least a master's degree in nurse anesthesia or a Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice. The direct relationship between the clinical graduate degree and the specific duties of the role satisfies the specialty occupation standard. Your employer will document this in the H-1B petition.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for CRNAs?
Hospital systems, academic medical centers, ambulatory surgery centers, and contracted anesthesia group practices all file H-1B petitions for CRNAs. Anesthesia groups structured as professional associations or LLCs can act as H-1B petitioners the same way hospitals do. You can find employers with verified H-1B filing history for anesthesia roles on Migrate Mate before you apply.
How does the H-1B lottery affect CRNA job seekers?
CRNAs are subject to the standard H-1B annual cap of 65,000 regular slots and 20,000 advanced degree exemption slots. USCIS runs the lottery each spring for petitions with an October 1 start date. If you're already working in the U.S. on a different nonimmigrant status, your employer must register you in the lottery before filing the full petition.
Can a CRNA employer file for H-1B status if the practice is a small anesthesia group?
Yes. There's no minimum employer size requirement for H-1B petitions. Small anesthesia practices and single-location surgery centers regularly sponsor H-1B CRNAs. The employer must have a valid Employer Identification Number, be registered with E-Verify for certain petition types, and pay the DOL-certified prevailing wage for your location and SOC code.
What happens to my H-1B status if I want to change CRNA employers?
You can change employers using H-1B portability under AC21, which allows you to start working for a new employer once the new petition is filed, without waiting for approval, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've been in valid status. Your new employer files a fresh I-129 petition with a new LCA. The original petition doesn't transfer.
