Check prevailing wage before salary negotiations
Run your target job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before you negotiate. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing level, so knowing the DOL threshold protects you and prevents filing delays.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Clinical Psychologist roles by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for this occupation. That history confirms willingness to sponsor and shortens the time from offer to petition filing.
Prioritize state licensure before your start date
Most hospital and healthcare employers require a valid state psychology license, not just a doctoral degree, before they'll file your H-1B. Confirm which state's license the role requires and start the application process as early as possible.
Ask employers about cap-exempt status upfront
Nonprofits affiliated with universities, government research institutions, and qualifying medical schools are cap-exempt, meaning they can file your H-1B petition at any time of year without waiting for the annual lottery registration window.
Clarify supervision requirements in your petition
Some Clinical Psychologist roles include supervised hours toward full licensure. Confirm with your employer that the I-129 petition accurately reflects your scope of practice, since a mismatch between the filed duties and actual work can create RFE risk.

Find Clinical Psychologist JobsClinical Psychologist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Psychologist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Clinical Psychologist positions qualify because the role normally requires a doctoral degree in psychology as a minimum entry requirement. USCIS evaluates the specific job duties and the degree requirement as stated in the LCA, so your employer should document that a Psy.D., Ph.D., or equivalent is the standard for the position.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Clinical Psychologists?
Hospital systems, VA medical centers, federally qualified health centers, university counseling services, and research institutions are the most consistent sponsors. Many of these are nonprofits or government affiliates, which makes them cap-exempt and able to file outside the annual lottery window. You can browse verified sponsoring employers for this role on Migrate Mate.
Does a foreign psychology degree qualify for the H-1B as a Clinical Psychologist?
A foreign doctoral degree in psychology can qualify, but it must be evaluated by a credential evaluation service to confirm U.S. equivalency before your employer files the I-129. USCIS looks at whether the degree is the equivalent of a U.S. doctoral degree in the specific field. Some evaluators use O*NET occupational standards as a reference point for the degree-field match.
Can I work as a Clinical Psychologist on an H-1B without a state license?
Most employers won't file an H-1B petition for a Clinical Psychologist role unless you hold the required state psychology license, because the license is typically listed as a job requirement in the LCA. If you're completing post-doctoral supervised hours toward licensure, confirm whether the role is structured as a supervised position, which may have different licensure requirements documented in the petition.
How does the H-1B lottery affect Clinical Psychologist job seekers?
If your target employer is a for-profit company or a nonprofit that isn't cap-exempt, your petition enters the annual lottery with an 85,000-slot cap. Cap-exempt employers, including many hospitals, VA facilities, and university-affiliated clinics, can file at any point in the year. Focusing your search on cap-exempt healthcare institutions gives you a direct path to sponsorship without lottery dependency.
