Verify your degree field supports LCA filing
The DOL's LCA requires your employer to certify your role is a specialty occupation. A degree in business administration, contract management, or supply chain directly maps to this title. A general studies degree may trigger an RFE.
Target employers with OFCCP or federal contract exposure
Defense contractors, construction management firms, and government-facing tech companies file LCAs for Contract Administrators at higher rates. These employers already have H-1B petition infrastructure in place and are familiar with prevailing-wage compliance.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter by job title and employer on Migrate Mate to see which companies have active LCA filing history for Contract Administrator roles. This saves you from applying to employers with no sponsorship track record in this occupation.
Confirm prevailing wage level before negotiating salary
Your employer's LCA must certify your wage meets the DOL prevailing wage for Contract Administrator in your metro area. Run the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation so you understand the wage level floors tied to your experience.
Ask whether your employer uses standard or premium processing
USCIS standard processing for an H-1B petition can run several months. If your start date is firm, ask your employer early whether they'll pay for premium processing, which guarantees a 15-business-day adjudication decision from USCIS.
Get a NCMA or CPCM credential before filing season
A National Contract Management Association certification strengthens the specialty occupation argument in your I-129 petition. USCIS adjudicators look for credential evidence that distinguishes Contract Administrator from generalist business roles.
H-1B Visa Contract Administrator: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Contract Administrator role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the employer can demonstrate the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as business, contract law, supply chain management, or a related discipline. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree regardless of field face higher RFE risk. Your employer's job description and internal hiring standards are what USCIS scrutinizes most closely during adjudication.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Contract Administrator jobs?
Defense and aerospace contractors, construction management firms, IT services companies with government contracts, and large healthcare systems file LCAs for this title regularly. These employers deal with high contract volumes, have dedicated procurement teams, and are already experienced navigating the DOL's prevailing-wage certification process. You can browse employers with verified LCA filing history for this role on Migrate Mate.
How does the DOL prevailing wage apply to a Contract Administrator position?
Before filing your H-1B petition, your employer must certify with the DOL that your offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for Contract Administrator in your specific metropolitan area. The prevailing wage is determined by wage level and local labor market data. You can look up current wage floors using the OFLC Wage Search tool before evaluating any offer.
Can a Contract Administrator role support an employment-based green card later?
It can, but the path depends on how your employer classifies the role. EB-2 or EB-3 PERM sponsorship is available for Contract Administrator positions that require a bachelor's degree. Employers must run a full PERM labor market test through the DOL before filing an I-140 petition. Roles with overly broad requirements sometimes face PERM audits, so the job description matters at every stage.
What documents should I prepare before an employer files my H-1B petition?
You'll need official transcripts showing a degree in a qualifying field, a copy of your current I-94, any prior H-1B approval notices if you're transferring, and a detailed letter from your employer documenting the specialty occupation requirements of the Contract Administrator role. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation report from an accredited evaluation service is also required by USCIS.
