Map your credentials to SOC 15-1212
Cybersecurity Consultant petitions are filed under SOC code 15-1212. Pull the O*NET profile for that code and confirm your degree field and job duties align before you apply. Mismatches between your transcript and the role description are a common RFE trigger.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Cybersecurity Consultant roles by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for this occupation. That filing history tells you which companies have already cleared DOL prevailing-wage certification for the role, not just which ones claim to sponsor.
Verify the prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Run your target metro area and SOC code through the OFLC Wage Search before any salary discussion. DOL assigns wage levels I through IV, and your offer must meet at least the Level I threshold. Coming in below that level makes LCA certification impossible.
Prioritize cap-exempt employers for faster entry
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government-affiliated entities are exempt from the H-1B annual cap, so you can start any time of year without waiting for the lottery. Many large consulting firms place staff at these institutions, which can also qualify the petition for cap exemption.
Get your clearance eligibility documented early
Federal cybersecurity consulting roles frequently require security clearances, and USCIS adjudicators may scrutinize whether a foreign national can realistically perform the job's classified functions. Have your employer document which duties are unclassified and confirm your eligibility pathway before the I-129 is filed.
Use premium processing if your start date is fixed
USCIS offers premium processing for I-129 petitions, guaranteeing a 15-business-day adjudication decision. If your consulting engagement has a hard start date tied to a client contract, premium processing reduces the risk of a gap in authorization between your offer acceptance and approved status.

Find Cybersecurity Consultant JobsCybersecurity Consultant H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Cybersecurity Consultant role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Cybersecurity Consultant positions map to SOC code 15-1212 and require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information security, or a closely related field. USCIS evaluates both the job description and your degree to confirm the specialty occupation standard is met. Roles where any bachelor's degree is accepted regardless of field can face RFEs, so the degree-to-duty alignment matters.
How do I find Cybersecurity Consultant employers who actually sponsor H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate filters Cybersecurity Consultant listings by verified H-1B LCA filing history, so you can see which employers have completed DOL Labor Condition Application certification for this role rather than relying on job postings that claim to sponsor. Consulting firms, managed security service providers, and financial institutions show up consistently in those filings.
Can a security clearance requirement block my H-1B petition as a Cybersecurity Consultant?
A clearance requirement doesn't automatically disqualify a petition, but it can complicate adjudication if the role involves predominantly classified duties that foreign nationals can't perform. The employer should document which responsibilities are unclassified and structure the job description to reflect what you'll actually do on day one. USCIS looks at whether the position is performable as described.
What happens to my H-1B status if my consulting firm loses a client contract?
H-1B status is tied to your sponsoring employer, not the end client. If your firm terminates your employment as a result of losing the contract, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsor, change status, or depart. Your employer is also required to pay for your return transportation home if they terminate your employment before your petition period ends.
Do Cybersecurity Consultant roles at government contractors qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filing?
Not automatically. Cap exemption applies to the employer entity, not the work's subject matter. If your direct employer is a qualifying nonprofit or institution of higher education, the petition can be cap-exempt. Private government contractors, even those doing federally funded security work, are cap-subject unless they meet the specific INA criteria for cap exemption independently.
