Align your degree to architecture roles
USCIS evaluates whether your degree field directly relates to cloud architecture. A computer science or information systems degree maps cleanly, but a general business degree may trigger an RFE. Document any cloud-specific coursework or certifications to strengthen the specialty occupation case.
Filter employers by LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to identify companies with verified LCA filings for cloud and infrastructure roles. Employers with consistent filing history for similar job codes are operationally set up to sponsor and less likely to stall during the petition stage.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating offers
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your job location and level. Run the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation so you know the wage floor for Cloud Architect roles at each wage level in your target city.
Target cap-exempt employers for faster timelines
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning your petition bypasses the annual lottery entirely. Cloud Architects supporting research computing or university infrastructure can file any time of year.
Understand how job duties affect your SOC code
Employers classify your role using a Standard Occupational Classification code, which determines the prevailing wage level. A Cloud Architect doing primarily design and strategy work maps differently than one doing hands-on engineering. Confirm the intended SOC code with your employer before the LCA is filed.
Request premium processing at offer acceptance
Premium processing guarantees USCIS adjudication within 15 business days. Negotiate this into your offer for roles with a defined start date. Employers routinely pay this fee for technical hires, and it eliminates the uncertainty of standard processing timelines.
H-1B Visa Cloud Architect: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Cloud Architect role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Cloud Architect falls under computer-related occupations, which USCIS consistently recognizes as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, or a directly related field. The O*NET profile for this occupation lists a bachelor's degree as the standard entry requirement, which supports the specialty occupation determination.
How do I find employers that actively sponsor H-1B visas for Cloud Architect roles?
Search Migrate Mate to browse Cloud Architect jobs at employers with verified H-1B sponsorship history. The platform filters results to companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for similar roles, so you're not spending time on employers who have never navigated the H-1B process for technical hires.
Can I switch Cloud Architect jobs while on H-1B status?
Yes, under AC21 portability rules, you can change employers once your H-1B has been approved and you've worked for your sponsoring employer for at least 180 days. Your new employer must file a new H-1B petition before your current authorization expires. The job must be in the same or a similar occupational classification.
What happens to my H-1B if my Cloud Architect role shifts to a different function?
If your duties change substantially, such as moving from architecture and design to primarily management or sales, USCIS may no longer consider the role a specialty occupation under the original petition. Your employer should file an amended H-1B petition before the role change takes effect to maintain lawful status and avoid compliance issues.
Do Cloud Architect contractors face different H-1B sponsorship requirements than direct hires?
Yes. When a staffing firm sponsors your H-1B for a client placement, USCIS scrutinizes whether the end client controls your daily work. The employer-employee relationship must exist with the sponsoring company, not the end client. Specialty occupation evidence and itinerary documentation become more important in these arrangements, and denials are more common without strong supporting documentation.
