Verify your degree aligns with SOC 15-1244
USCIS evaluates specialty occupation by matching your degree field to the role's SOC code. For Enterprise Systems Engineer, degrees in computer science, information systems, or electrical engineering satisfy the requirement most cleanly. A business or unrelated degree invites an RFE.
Check prevailing wages before negotiating your offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up SOC code 15-1244 in your specific metro area before you accept an offer. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above Level I through IV, and your offered salary must meet that floor.
Target employers with E-Verify enrollment
H-1B sponsoring employers must be E-Verify participants. Filter your search to companies already enrolled, since employers without E-Verify cannot file your petition. Migrate Mate surfaces LCA filing history by employer so you can confirm sponsorship activity before applying.
Document enterprise-scale system ownership in your resume
USCIS scrutinizes whether the role genuinely requires a specialized degree. Quantify your scope: number of integrated platforms, infrastructure scale, and cross-functional dependencies. Vague titles like 'systems generalist' weaken the specialty occupation argument your employer must make.
Ask employers about H-1B cap-exempt status early
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with higher education, and certain research institutions are cap-exempt, meaning you can file any time without waiting for the annual April lottery. If you're not selected in the lottery, cap-exempt employers are a direct path to immediate filing.
Understand the employer's I-129 timeline before your start date
H-1B cap-subject petitions have an October 1 start date. If your offer letter shows an earlier start, either a cap-exempt employer is filing or premium processing is involved. Confirm which applies so your OPT or other status doesn't gap before your H-1B activates.
H-1B Visa Enterprise Systems Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Enterprise Systems Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Enterprise Systems Engineer maps to SOC code 15-1244 and USCIS treats it as a specialty occupation because the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or electrical engineering. Your employer documents the degree requirement in the LCA and I-129 petition. Roles blending general IT management with systems engineering occasionally receive RFEs if the job duties appear too broad, so the position description needs to reflect specialized technical scope.
Which employers actually sponsor H-1B visas for Enterprise Systems Engineers?
Employers with large internal infrastructure teams, defense contractors, cloud platform companies, financial institutions, and healthcare systems are consistent H-1B sponsors for this role. To identify specific companies with verified filing history, search Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data by occupation and employer so you can see who has actively sponsored Enterprise Systems Engineer roles.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect an Enterprise Systems Engineer offer?
Before filing your H-1B petition, your employer submits an LCA to DOL certifying your wage meets the prevailing wage for SOC 15-1244 in your work location. Wages are tiered from Level I (entry) to Level IV (fully experienced). You can check the applicable level using the OFLC Wage Search. If your offered salary falls below the certified level, DOL will not approve the LCA and the H-1B petition cannot proceed.
Can I switch employers as an Enterprise Systems Engineer without losing my H-1B status?
Yes, under H-1B portability rules in AC21, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition, provided your original petition was approved and you've been in H-1B status for at least 180 days. The new employer files a fresh I-129, but you don't need to wait for approval before your start date. Your job duties and SOC code should remain consistent to avoid a specialty occupation challenge.
What documentation should I prepare before an employer files my H-1B petition?
Your employer needs your academic credentials, including transcripts and degree certificates, along with any foreign credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S. You'll also need to provide your current immigration documents, passport, and prior visa approvals. If your bachelor's degree is in a field adjacent to systems engineering, a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization strengthens the specialty occupation argument. USCIS also expects a detailed offer letter specifying the position, location, and wage.
