Align your resume to LCA job codes
SRE roles get filed under DOL occupation codes like Software Developers or Computer Occupations. Match your resume's language to the SOC code your target employer uses, so your credentials map cleanly to the LCA they'll file.
Verify your degree satisfies specialty occupation
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the SRE role. A computer science or software engineering degree is the cleanest path. Related fields like electrical engineering or information systems can qualify if your coursework covers systems reliability concepts.
Search for employers with active LCA filings
Use Migrate Mate to filter SRE roles by employers with verified H-1B Labor Condition Application history, so you're applying to companies that have already cleared the DOL filing process rather than employers figuring it out for the first time.
Clarify infrastructure ownership before accepting offers
SRE roles at staffing vendors or consulting firms often place you at a client site, which creates a secondary employer relationship USCIS scrutinizes heavily. Before accepting an offer, confirm whether the petitioning employer controls your day-to-day work assignments.
Request premium processing for time-sensitive transitions
If you're changing employers within your 60-day grace period, standard H-1B processing timelines can push past your authorized stay. Ask your new employer to file with USCIS premium processing to get a decision within 15 business days.
Document on-call and incident-response work for RFEs
USCIS sometimes issues Requests for Evidence questioning whether SRE duties are truly specialty occupation. Detailed offer letters listing reliability engineering responsibilities, SLO ownership, and incident command work strengthen your petition against that challenge.
H-1B Visa Sre Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an SRE Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. SRE Engineer positions fall under USCIS's computer occupations category and consistently meet the specialty occupation standard when the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a directly related field. The O*NET profile for this occupation lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education, which supports the specialty occupation argument in most petitions.
How do I find SRE Engineer employers who sponsor H-1B visas?
Search Migrate Mate for SRE Engineer roles filtered by verified H-1B sponsorship history. Employers with active Labor Condition Application filings on record have already demonstrated willingness and ability to sponsor. Targeting these companies shortens your job search significantly compared to approaching employers who have never filed an H-1B petition before.
What wage level should my H-1B petition list for an SRE Engineer role?
Your employer must certify a prevailing wage at or above the DOL wage level that matches your experience and job duties. SRE roles with significant autonomy, on-call ownership, and cross-functional responsibilities often warrant Level III or Level IV wages. You can check applicable wage floors by SOC code and location using the OFLC Wage Search before evaluating any offer.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new SRE employer mid-year without losing status?
Yes, under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a non-frivolous H-1B transfer petition, even before USCIS approves it. Your previous employer's approved H-1B is what enables the transfer, so you don't need to wait for a new cap selection. The 60-day grace period after leaving your prior job gives you a window to initiate this process.
Does working as a contractor or through a staffing agency affect my H-1B as an SRE?
It can complicate your petition. USCIS applies an end-client relationship test to SRE roles placed at client sites, requiring the petitioning employer to demonstrate it controls your work. Itinerary letters, master service agreements, and statements of work that show employer control over your reliability engineering duties are typically required. Direct-hire SRE roles avoid this scrutiny entirely.
