H-1B Visa Software Test Engineer Jobs
Software Test Engineer roles qualify as H-1B visa specialty occupations because they require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Employers file your H-1B petition after securing a certified Labor Condition Application from the DOL, which locks in your prevailing wage level before your start date.

Pull your SOC code before applying
Software Test Engineers typically fall under SOC 15-1253 (Software Quality Assurance Analysts). Confirm this in O*NET before interviews so you can speak to your role's specialty occupation classification if an employer's HR team raises questions.
Verify LCA wage levels for your metro
Your employer's LCA must pay at least the prevailing wage for your location and experience level. Run the OFLC Wage Search with SOC code 15-1253 and your city to know whether an offer meets the threshold before accepting.
Filter employers by active H-1B filing history
Target companies that have sponsored H-1B petitions for QA and test engineering roles before. Migrate Mate surfaces verified DOL Labor Condition Application data by occupation, so you can see which employers have filed for roles matching your background.
Confirm STEM OPT employer eligibility early
If you're bridging from STEM OPT, your employer must be E-Verify enrolled before you can extend your authorization. Confirm enrollment during the offer stage, not after signing, to avoid a gap between your OPT expiration and H-1B cap-gap coverage.
Request premium processing if your start date is tight
Standard H-1B processing through USCIS can run months past your intended start date. If your offer has a fixed onboarding window, ask your employer to file with premium processing, which guarantees a decision within 15 business days.
Document test methodology and tools in your petition
H-1B specialty occupation approvals for test roles sometimes draw RFEs when job duties appear generic. Ensure your employer's support letter specifies the tools you'll use, the systems under test, and the degree-level knowledge required to perform the work.
H-1B Visa Software Test Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Software Test Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as computer science, software engineering, or information systems. Roles where any technical background qualifies, regardless of field, are more vulnerable to USCIS RFEs. Your employer's job description and support letter should tie specific degree requirements to the actual duties performed.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Software Test Engineers?
Technology companies, defense contractors, financial services firms, and healthcare IT organizations are among the most frequent H-1B sponsors for QA and test engineering roles. Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified DOL Labor Condition Application history, so you can identify employers who have sponsored H-1B petitions for software quality and testing positions specifically, rather than relying on employer self-reporting.
Can I switch employers during my H-1B if I'm a Software Test Engineer?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules established by AC21, you can start working for a new employer once they file an H-1B transfer petition on your behalf, as long as your current H-1B has been approved and you've maintained valid status. You don't need to wait for the transfer petition to be approved before your first day at the new company.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect test engineer offers?
Your employer must pay at least the prevailing wage for your occupation, experience level, and work location as certified in their Labor Condition Application filed with DOL. For Software Test Engineers, wage levels vary significantly by metro area and seniority. You can verify the applicable threshold using the OFLC Wage Search with SOC code 15-1253 before evaluating any offer.
What happens to my H-1B status if my test engineer role is reclassified or my team is restructured?
A significant change in job duties, worksite location, or employment terms may constitute a material change that requires your employer to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS before the change takes effect. Promotions into management, shifts to a different primary SOC code, or moves to a new worksite outside the original LCA's coverage area all commonly trigger the amended filing requirement.
