Align your degree to the role
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to the Support Engineer position. A computer science or information systems degree maps cleanly. If your degree is in a adjacent field, gather official transcripts and equivalency documentation before applying.
Look up prevailing wages before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing level for your location and job title. Run your SOC code and metro area through the OFLC Wage Search before any offer discussion so you know what the DOL floor is.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Support Engineer roles by verified H-1B LCA filing history. Employers who've filed LCAs for this title before understand the process and won't need to be educated on specialty occupation requirements mid-hire.
Clarify whether the role is cap-subject
Universities, nonprofits, and government research organizations are cap-exempt, meaning you can start any time of year without waiting for the October 1 start date. Ask recruiters early whether the entity files cap-subject or cap-exempt H-1B petitions.
Request premium processing at the offer stage
USCIS adjudicates premium processing petitions within 15 business days. For Support Engineer roles where a team needs coverage quickly, ask your prospective employer to include premium processing in the offer before you resign from your current position.
Check O*NET before the specialty occupation assessment
USCIS officers often reference O*NET when evaluating whether a Support Engineer role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Review the O*NET profile for your specific job zone and make sure your offer letter job duties match the described entry requirements.
H-1B Visa Support Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Support Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, as long as the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as computer science, information systems, or engineering. Roles that accept any degree or list a degree as preferred rather than required can face RFEs. Your offer letter job duties should match the degree requirement explicitly.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Support Engineers?
SaaS companies, cloud infrastructure providers, enterprise software vendors, and large financial institutions are frequent H-1B sponsors for Support Engineer roles. Migrate Mate lets you browse Support Engineer openings filtered by verified H-1B LCA filing history, so you can focus on employers who have already gone through the process for this job title.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm laid off as a Support Engineer?
You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new sponsoring employer, change to another nonimmigrant status, or leave the U.S. Your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before the grace period expires. USCIS allows you to start working for the new employer once the transfer petition is filed, not just approved.
Can my employer change my job title from Support Engineer to another role while I'm on H-1B?
A material change in job duties, title, or work location typically requires an amended H-1B petition. If the new role falls under a different SOC code or has substantially different responsibilities, your employer must file an amendment with USCIS before the change takes effect. A cosmetic title change with identical duties generally doesn't require a new filing.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect Support Engineer hiring?
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application certifying they'll pay you at least the prevailing wage for a Support Engineer in your work location. DOL sets this using wage level data tied to your SOC code and metro area. If you'll work remotely from a different city than your employer's address, the LCA must cover each location where you'll spend significant time.
