INTRODUCTION
Apple Service Engineering is seeking an exceptional Senior Software Engineer in Test to take on a high visibility, high impact role at the center of our next-generation datacenter and Private Cloud Compute initiatives. This is a role for a senior engineer who wants to define how world-class distributed systems are tested, validated, and scaled at one of the most ambitious infrastructure efforts in the industry.
You will be a technical leader and key contributor to the foundation of Apple's future cloud architecture, working directly with the systems that power Apple Intelligence and Private Cloud Compute. You will drive critical testing and validation initiatives across highly performant, energy efficient platforms built on Apple Silicon, and will play a central role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and scalability of next-generation datacenter technology that reaches hundreds of millions of people.
In this highly collaborative and cross-functional role, you will partner with architecture teams, SOC architects, platform engineers, and software teams across Apple to adapt, validate, and scale software on novel compute platforms. If you are a senior engineer who thrives on solving hard problems, owning critical initiatives end-to-end, and building systems that have never been built before, this is the role for you.
DESCRIPTION
As a Senior Software Engineer in Test on the Private Cloud Compute team, you will be responsible for driving the test strategy, automation infrastructure, and validation frameworks that underpin some of Apple's most critical and technically complex distributed systems. You will operate at the intersection of hardware and software, working across the full stack to ensure that next-generation datacenter technology is performant, reliable, and ready to scale.
You will be expected to bring senior-level technical leadership to every initiative you own, from defining test architecture to driving resolution of the most complex system-level issues. You will collaborate directly with hardware and platform teams to validate novel compute platforms before they reach production and will build the tooling and automation infrastructure that enables the broader engineering organization to move with speed and confidence.
Responsibilities
-
Lead the design and implementation of scalable, resilient test frameworks and automation infrastructure for distributed systems running on next-generation datacenter hardware and Private Cloud Compute platforms.

Hands-on experience with cloud orchestration engines such as Kubernetes, Nomad, Apache Mesos, or equivalent platforms.
-
Demonstrated ability to triage and drive resolution of complex, cross-functional system failures with a structured, data-driven approach.
-
Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to operate effectively in a highly cross-functional environment across hardware, software, and platform teams.
-
A genuine passion for software architecture, high performance systems, and building extensible, maintainable automation infrastructure.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Experience validating ML or LLM workloads running on hardware accelerators such as GPUs, NPUs, or Apple Silicon in a cloud or datacenter environment.

Familiarity with Apple development tools, Swift, or Objective-C.
-
Experience building test infrastructure for systems at the hardware-software boundary, including firmware, drivers, or low-level platform software.
-
Knowledge of energy efficiency and performance profiling techniques for high performance computing workloads.
-
Experience contributing to or defining test strategy at an organizational level, not just within a single team or product area.
-
Prior experience working in a private cloud, hyperscale datacenter, or edge compute environment.

Align your resume to SOC codes
USCIS evaluates H-1B petitions against Standard Occupational Classification codes. SDETs are typically filed under SOC 15-1252 (Software Developers, Quality Assurance Analysts). Check O*NET to confirm your duties match that code before applying.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Your offer must meet or exceed the DOL prevailing wage for your metro area and experience level. Run your job title and location through OFLC Wage Search before the offer stage so you can negotiate from an accurate floor.
Filter employers by active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to identify companies with verified H-1B LCA filings for software quality and test engineering roles, so you're targeting employers who have already demonstrated they'll sponsor rather than ones who might.
Prioritize cap-exempt employers for faster timelines
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning no lottery and year-round filing. SDET roles at these organizations can start within weeks of approval rather than waiting for an October 1 start date.
Request premium processing before your OPT expires
USCIS premium processing guarantees a 15-business-day adjudication decision. If you're on OPT with a tight expiration, confirm your employer will file with premium processing early enough to avoid a gap before cap-gap protection kicks in.
Document your test engineering specialization clearly
RFEs for SDET H-1B petitions often challenge whether the role truly requires a specialty degree. Include job duties that demonstrate you use computer science fundamentals, not just scripting, to make the specialty occupation argument airtight.

Find Senior Software Engineer In Test JobsSenior Software Engineer In Test H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Software Engineer in Test role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the role requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a directly related field. USCIS scrutinizes SDET petitions more closely than pure developer roles, so your employer's job description should explicitly tie test architecture, frameworks, and quality system design to that degree requirement, not just general scripting or manual testing tasks.
How do I find employers actively sponsoring H-1B visas for SDET roles?
Search Migrate Mate to browse Senior Software Engineer in Test openings filtered by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history. DOL discloses LCA data publicly, so you can see which companies have filed for software quality and test engineering roles before you invest time applying.
What SOC code do employers use when filing an H-1B for a Senior SDET?
Most employers file SDET H-1B petitions under SOC 15-1252, Software Developers, Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers. Some file under 15-1299, Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers, depending on the role's primary duties. Check O*NET for the task and knowledge descriptions that best match your actual responsibilities to confirm alignment before your employer files the LCA.
Can my employer sponsor me for H-1B while I'm still on OPT STEM extension?
Yes. Employers can file your H-1B cap-subject petition during the lottery registration window in March while you're on STEM OPT. If selected and approved, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization from when your OPT expires through September 30, then your H-1B status begins October 1. Confirm your employer will file with premium processing to reduce timing risk.
What documentation supports a strong H-1B petition for a Senior SDET role?
Your employer needs a detailed job description tying each duty to specific computer science knowledge, your degree transcripts, and the certified LCA from DOL. For senior-level petitions, USCIS may also want evidence of your progression, such as performance reviews, prior promotion letters, or documentation of the scale and complexity of the test systems you've owned.
