As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll bridge traditional fintech and blockchain technologies to build our next-generation payments infrastructure. You’ll collaborate with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to define and execute the technical vision behind our crypto payments and loyalty platforms. You’ll shape key architectural decisions, establish engineering best practices, and help scale secure, user-friendly Web3 payment experiences.
We’re looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, high-ownership environment and is passionate about building products that seamlessly bridge the on-chain and off-chain worlds.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend APIs that integrate blockchain transactions with traditional payment systems.
- Integrate on-chain wallet services, managing wallet lifecycle events, transactions, and user authentication.
- Implement secure and scalable solutions for on-chain payment flows, transaction signing, and state reconciliation.
- Work with smart contracts, blockchain oracles, and data providers to facilitate reliable on-chain interactions.
- Uphold and promote backend best practices with a focus on security, testing, and reliability.
- Mentor engineers and foster a collaborative, growth-oriented team culture.
- Participate in product and design discussions, providing backend and blockchain perspectives on implementation and feasibility.
REQUIREMENTS
- 5+ years of experience building and deploying backend APIs.
- Strong proficiency in Kotlin or another statically typed JVM language.
- Working knowledge of Solidity, smart contract design, and EVM-based ecosystems.
- Experience designing RESTful APIs and distributed systems using domain-driven design principles.
- Familiarity with blockchain architectures, smart contract interactions, wallet authentication flows, and transaction signing.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering secure, high-quality user experiences.
- Comfortable working cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering teams.
NICE TO HAVES
- Experience with Spring Boot, Hibernate, and asynchronous event-driven architectures.
- Familiarity with the U.S. payments ecosystem, including debit, credit, and ACH processing.
- Exposure to AWS infrastructure, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Understanding of cryptographic primitives (signatures, hashing, key management).
- Experience with embedded wallet SDKs (e.g., MetaMask, WalletConnect) or user identity systems (OAuth, Web3 login flows, Auth0).
- Experience building in-app crypto wallets or integrating on-chain/off-chain loyalty systems.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Blockchain Engineer
Verify your degree maps to blockchain
USCIS scrutinizes whether your specific degree directly supports a Blockchain Engineer role. A computer science or software engineering degree holds up well; a general business degree rarely does. Pull the O*NET profile for this occupation to see how adjudicators evaluate the degree-to-role connection.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter Blockchain Engineer roles by employers who have active H-1B LCA filings in this occupation code. That filing history confirms the employer understands the sponsorship process and has already cleared DOL's prevailing-wage certification step.
Run the prevailing wage before salary talks
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your job zone and metro area before any offer conversation. Blockchain Engineers in financial hubs like New York or San Francisco fall into higher wage tiers, and the LCA must certify your offered wage meets or exceeds that level.
Ask employers about cap-exempt status early
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and certain government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning your petition bypasses the lottery entirely. If you're open to those environments, confirm cap-exempt status in the first recruiter call so you're not planning around a lottery that doesn't apply.
Document your blockchain project contributions precisely
USCIS RFEs on Blockchain Engineer petitions often challenge whether the role genuinely requires a theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge. Gather code repositories, architecture documents, audit reports, and published technical contributions before your employer's attorney drafts the support letter.
File premium processing if your start date is tight
Standard H-1B adjudication runs several months after cap selection in April. If your OPT or current status expires close to October 1, ask your employer to file Form I-907 for premium processing so USCIS returns a decision within 15 business days and leaves time to respond to any RFE.

Find Blockchain Engineer JobsBlockchain Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Blockchain Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, software engineering, or information systems. Roles that accept any degree or substitute years of experience without a degree requirement weaken the specialty-occupation argument. The employer's job description must reflect that theoretical and practical application of specialized knowledge is central to the work.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Blockchain Engineers?
Financial services firms, cryptocurrency exchanges, enterprise software companies, and blockchain infrastructure startups are the most active sponsors in this occupation. Cap-exempt universities and government-affiliated research labs also hire Blockchain Engineers without requiring lottery selection. Migrate Mate lets you filter Blockchain Engineer openings by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history, so you're not guessing at sponsorship willingness.
How does the H-1B lottery affect Blockchain Engineer job timelines?
USCIS opens registration in March, selects registrants by late March, and the earliest a cap-subject H-1B can start is October 1. That gap means you need OPT, OPT STEM extension, or another valid status to bridge from selection to your start date. Blockchain Engineers whose employers qualify as cap-exempt bypass the lottery entirely and can start year-round.
Can a Blockchain Engineer on OPT work for a crypto startup while waiting for H-1B approval?
Yes, if the startup filed your H-1B petition before your OPT expired and USCIS received it in time to trigger cap-gap protection. Cap-gap automatically extends your OPT authorization through September 30 if your petition is timely filed and properly maintained. Confirm the startup has an Employer Identification Number and can sign the LCA, since some early-stage entities run into DOL compliance issues at that step.
What happens to H-1B status if a Blockchain Engineer's employer is acquired or shuts down?
If the acquiring company is a successor in interest and assumes the same wage obligations and working conditions, your existing H-1B often transfers without a new petition. If the employer shuts down, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, have a new I-129 filed on your behalf, or take another action to maintain status. Document the acquisition terms with your employer's attorney as soon as a deal is announced.
