Verify your role meets specialty occupation standards
Pull the O*NET profile for Technical Lead and confirm the job zone and education requirements. USCIS scrutinizes hybrid management-engineering roles, so document that your position requires a specific technical degree, not a general bachelor's in any field.
Check prevailing wage levels before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Level II and Level III wages for your SOC code and target metro area. Employers must certify the higher of the actual or prevailing wage, so knowing the floor stops you from accepting offers that can't clear the LCA.
Target employers with cap-exempt filing pathways
Universities, affiliated nonprofits, and qualifying research organizations can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap. If you're open to higher-education or research environments, these roles let you start without waiting for an April lottery selection.
Search H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter by Technical Lead job titles in Migrate Mate to see which employers have active LCA certifications for this role. Prioritize companies with recent filings in your target city, since a prior LCA signals the employer already understands the specialty occupation requirements.
Request premium processing before your start date
Standard H-1B adjudication can run several months. If your offer letter has a firm start date, ask the employer to file with premium processing so USCIS targets a 15-business-day decision, reducing the risk of a delayed start or cap-gap complications.
Prepare a specialty occupation evidence package early
USCIS issues Requests for Evidence on Technical Lead petitions when the role spans both coding and people management. Gather job postings, organizational charts, and a detailed duties letter showing the position requires applied technical knowledge at the bachelor's-degree level or above.

Find Technical Lead JobsTechnical Lead H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Lead role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical discipline such as computer science, software engineering, or a related field. USCIS evaluates the actual duties, not just the title. Roles that blend team management with hands-on architecture or engineering work qualify, but employers must document why a general degree is insufficient.
How do I find employers who sponsor H-1B visas for Technical Lead positions?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified LCA filings tied to Technical Lead job titles, so you can target companies that have already navigated the DOL certification process for this role. Filtering by location and filing recency helps you focus outreach on employers actively hiring at this level rather than those who sponsored years ago in a different market.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Technical Lead role without restarting the process?
You can port to a new employer under H-1B portability once your current petition has been approved and you've maintained valid status. The new employer files an I-129 transfer petition, and you can start working as soon as USCIS receives it. The specialty occupation requirements still apply, and the new role must qualify independently.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm laid off from a Technical Lead role?
USCIS provides a 60-day grace period after involuntary termination, during which you can pursue a new H-1B transfer, change to a different visa status, or make arrangements to depart. The grace period runs once per authorized validity period, so securing a new employer petition receipt before day 60 is essential to maintaining continuous authorized status.
Does the prevailing wage for Technical Lead vary by location?
Yes. The DOL sets prevailing wages by SOC code and metropolitan area, so a Technical Lead in San Francisco carries a higher certified wage floor than the same role in a smaller market. Your employer's LCA must certify the wage applicable to the specific work location listed on the petition, not the company's headquarters city.
