Verify your degree field matches the role
USCIS evaluates whether your degree is in a field directly related to product management, typically computer science, engineering, or information systems. A general business degree alone can trigger an RFE, so gather transcripts and any supplemental coursework documentation before applying.
Check employer LCA filings before applying
Search the OFLC Wage Search to confirm a company has filed Labor Condition Applications for Software Product Manager or closely related titles. Employers with no LCA history in this occupation may lack an internal process to sponsor the role, even if they're open to it.
Use Migrate Mate to target verified sponsors
Filter your job search on Migrate Mate to surface employers with documented H-1B filing history for product management roles. This cuts out companies that list open positions but have never sponsored a visa for this occupation.
Negotiate premium processing into your offer
Standard H-1B adjudication can run several months, which creates start-date uncertainty for both sides. Ask during offer negotiation whether the employer will elect premium processing through USCIS, which reduces the decision window significantly and gives you a firmer start date.
Document your specialty occupation case proactively
Product Manager job descriptions vary widely, and USCIS may question whether the role genuinely requires a specialized degree. Work with your employer to ensure the job posting and I-129 petition tie every core responsibility to degree-level technical knowledge, not just general business judgment.
Understand the cap-exempt employer option
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and certain government-affiliated entities are exempt from the H-1B annual cap and lottery. If you're open to product roles at these institutions, you can file any time of year without waiting for the April registration window.

Find Software Product Manager JobsSoftware Product Manager H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Software Product Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field such as computer science, software engineering, or information systems. Generic product management roles framed around business strategy without a technical degree requirement can face scrutiny. The employer's job description and the LCA filing both need to reflect that specialized knowledge is a prerequisite, not a preference.
Which employers commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Software Product Managers?
Technology companies, enterprise software vendors, and SaaS platforms make up the majority of H-1B sponsors for this role. Companies that ship their own software products tend to have established internal processes for sponsorship. You can find employers with verified filing history for this occupation on Migrate Mate, which surfaces LCA data by job title and company.
Can I switch employers mid-H-1B if I'm working as a Software Product Manager?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer once they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf, as long as your current status is valid and you've been in H-1B status for at least 180 days. Your new employer files a fresh I-129 and LCA specific to the product management role they're offering, not a transfer of your existing petition.
What wage level should a Software Product Manager H-1B petition be filed at?
The DOL's prevailing wage system assigns wage levels based on job complexity, supervision required, and scope of responsibility. Senior or principal product manager roles typically land at Level III or IV. You can check the applicable wage for a specific location and job title using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer, which helps you evaluate whether the employer's compensation meets the legal floor.
Does an MBA or business degree support an H-1B petition for a Software Product Manager role?
An MBA can support the petition if the role's responsibilities are framed around business and market strategy, but USCIS increasingly expects a technical undergraduate degree for software-focused product roles. If your background is primarily business, your employer's attorney should document how your combination of education and experience satisfies the specialty occupation standard under USCIS guidelines. Roles at companies that build or sell software products carry higher technical degree expectations.
