Map your degree to QA specialty occupation
USCIS evaluates whether your degree field directly relates to the QA role. A computer science or software engineering degree strengthens your case. If your degree is in a different field, document how coursework and experience connect to test engineering and software validation.
Search LCA filings for QA-specific employers
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by LCA filings for Software Quality Assurance roles. DOL disclosure data shows which companies have actively sponsored QA positions, so you're targeting employers with a real filing history rather than guessing at willingness.
Check E-Verify enrollment before STEM OPT extensions
If you're bridging from STEM OPT to H-1B, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm enrollment status before accepting an offer, since a non-enrolled employer can't support a STEM OPT extension and your work authorization timeline depends on it.
Benchmark your wage against OFLC Wage Search
Your employer's LCA must certify wages at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your QA role, location, and experience level. Pull the OFLC Wage Search data for your SOC code before negotiations so you know the floor your offer must clear.
Clarify job duties match QA specialty occupation criteria
Generic QA job titles don't automatically qualify. Ask prospective employers to confirm the role requires a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Roles framed around manual testing alone receive more scrutiny from USCIS than positions requiring software engineering judgment.
File during the H-1B cap window with cap-gap coverage
H-1B petitions for cap-subject employers must be filed for an October 1 start date. If your OPT expires before October 1, cap-gap protection extends your work authorization automatically once USCIS receives your petition, provided you remain in the same position.
H-1B Visa Software Quality Assurance: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Software Quality Assurance role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a closely related technical field. Roles focused purely on manual testing with no degree requirement may not qualify. The stronger your job description ties test engineering responsibilities to a specific degree field, the cleaner the specialty occupation argument becomes under USCIS standards.
How do I find employers who sponsor H-1B visas for QA roles?
Search Migrate Mate to browse Software Quality Assurance positions filtered by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history. DOL Labor Condition Application data shows which companies have filed for QA roles before, which is a stronger signal than asking employers cold whether they sponsor.
What happens to my H-1B status if my QA role changes significantly after approval?
A material change in job duties, location, or employer can require an amended H-1B petition. If your role shifts from manual QA to a distinct function like DevOps or product management, your employer should file an amendment before the change takes effect. USCIS treats unamended material changes as a violation of status, so document any significant duty changes with your employer's immigration counsel.
Can a staffing agency sponsor my H-1B for a Software QA contract role?
Yes, but USCIS applies heightened scrutiny to third-party placement arrangements. The staffing agency acts as the petitioner, but USCIS evaluates whether a valid employer-employee relationship exists and whether the end client's worksite controls the day-to-day work. Your employer should be prepared to provide an end-client letter and contracts documenting the placement terms.
Does my STEM OPT count toward QA roles that require specific tools or certifications?
STEM OPT work authorization is tied to your degree's CIP code, not to any specific tool set. A software engineering or computer science degree supports QA roles regardless of whether the job uses Selenium, Jira, or Cypress. What matters for STEM OPT eligibility is that your employer is E-Verify enrolled and that the role relates to your degree field, which most software QA positions do.
