Verify your SOC code before applying
Platform Engineering Manager positions are typically filed under SOC 11-3021 (Computer and Information Systems Managers). Confirm this on O*NET before interviews so you can flag misclassifications early, which affect your prevailing wage tier and LCA accuracy.
Check employer LCA history by occupation
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers who have filed LCAs specifically for engineering management roles. Employers with recent, approved filings for your SOC code are far more likely to move quickly through the sponsorship process than first-time filers.
Target cap-exempt employers for faster timelines
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated organizations are cap-exempt, meaning they can file your H-1B petition outside the April lottery window. Platform engineering roles at these employers often go unfilled due to lower applicant volume.
Document your team leadership scope in writing
USCIS scrutinizes management titles that lack direct reports or budgetary authority. Before your offer letter is drafted, align with your future employer on headcount, reporting lines, and infrastructure scope so the petition clearly establishes specialty occupation at the manager level.
Request premium processing if your start date is fixed
Premium processing guarantees a 15-business-day adjudication decision from USCIS. For Platform Engineering Manager roles with a hard onboarding date tied to a product launch or team transition, this avoids the risk of a delayed start while standard processing runs its course.
Confirm prevailing wage level before negotiating your offer
Run your job title, SOC code, and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before finalizing compensation. The LCA must certify your wage meets at least the prevailing wage for your level, and a salary negotiated below Level II or III can create compliance problems at filing.
H-1B Visa Platform Engineering Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Platform Engineering Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field. USCIS looks for a direct relationship between the degree and the job duties. Roles that blend infrastructure oversight with team leadership qualify when the technical requirements are clearly documented in the job description and the LCA.
Which SOC code do employers typically use when filing an H-1B for this role?
Most employers file Platform Engineering Manager positions under SOC 11-3021, Computer and Information Systems Managers. Some may use SOC 15-1299 depending on the technical weighting of the role. The SOC code determines your prevailing wage tier, so confirming it with your employer before the LCA is submitted protects you from a wage compliance issue later.
How do I find employers who have actually sponsored H-1B visas for engineering manager roles?
Migrate Mate filters employers by their DOL LCA filing history, so you can see which companies have certified labor condition applications for engineering management occupations. This tells you which employers have an established sponsorship process rather than those who say they're open to sponsorship but have never filed for a comparable role.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new company if I'm already a Platform Engineering Manager?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new I-129 petition, as long as your current status is valid and you've maintained lawful status throughout. The new employer must file a fresh LCA at the prevailing wage for your location and role level before or concurrent with the I-129.
Does moving from an individual contributor engineering role to a manager title affect my H-1B petition?
A promotion to Platform Engineering Manager at the same company is considered a material change if it involves a new location, significantly different duties, or a wage level change. Your employer must file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS before the new role begins. Skipping this step can create a status violation even though you stayed with the same sponsor.
