H-1B Visa Software Development Manager Jobs
Software Development Manager roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Employers must file a Labor Condition Application before your petition, and the annual cap means timing your job search around the April lottery window matters.

Document your technical leadership credentials early
USCIS scrutinizes Software Development Manager petitions more than pure individual-contributor roles. Gather performance reviews, org charts showing direct reports, and project scope documentation that prove your degree directly supports managerial and technical decision-making responsibilities.
Check employer LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter by Software Development Manager job codes to see which companies have certified LCAs for this exact role. That filing history tells you which employers already understand the H-1B process for managers, not just engineers.
Target cap-exempt employers to bypass the lottery
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government-affiliated entities can file H-1B petitions year-round without lottery exposure. Software Development Manager roles at these organizations face the same specialty-occupation standard but none of the April registration risk.
Verify your wage level before accepting an offer
The DOL prevailing-wage standard for Software Development Managers varies by wage level and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search using SOC code 11-9041 before negotiating, so you know whether the offered salary clears the Level II or Level III threshold your employer must certify.
Negotiate for premium processing in your offer letter
USCIS offers 15-business-day adjudication through premium processing. For a managerial role where onboarding timelines affect team delivery, get written confirmation that your employer will file with premium processing before you give notice at a current job.
Prepare for a specialty-occupation RFE on management roles
USCIS sometimes issues Requests for Evidence arguing that management positions don't require a specific degree. Counter this upfront with a detailed job duties letter tying every responsibility to your degree field, supported by the O*NET profile for the occupation.
H-1B Visa Software Development Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Software Development Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, software engineering, or information systems. USCIS evaluates the actual duties, not just the job title. Roles that blend technical architecture decisions with people management generally qualify, but your employer's offer letter and job description need to make the degree requirement explicit and defensible.
Which employers actually sponsor H-1B visas for Software Development Manager positions?
Large technology companies, enterprise software firms, financial services companies with in-house engineering, and defense contractors regularly sponsor H-1B visas for Software Development Manager roles. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified LCA filing history for this job code, so you can prioritize companies that have already run the process for this specific position rather than guessing from job postings alone.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a Software Development Manager role at a new employer?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for approval, as long as you've been in valid H-1B status. The new employer must file a fresh LCA for the Software Development Manager position and certify the prevailing wage for your location and level before submitting the I-129 petition to USCIS.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement apply to Software Development Manager jobs?
Your employer must certify with DOL that your offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for Software Development Manager roles at the applicable wage level in your work location. Wage Level III or IV is typical for experienced managers. You can verify the applicable wage yourself using the OFLC Wage Search under SOC code 11-9041 before finalizing your offer negotiation.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm promoted from Software Engineer to Software Development Manager?
A promotion that materially changes your job duties, title, or wage level typically requires an amended H-1B petition filed with USCIS before or concurrent with the role change. Your employer must file a new LCA reflecting the manager-level prevailing wage for your location. Don't assume the existing petition covers the new position without confirming with your employer's immigration counsel.
