Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as an iOS Developer
Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to iOS development. Computer science, software engineering, and information systems degrees are straightforward. A business or unrelated degree creates an RFE risk, so gather transcripts showing relevant coursework before applying.
Search LCA filings by SOC code
iOS Developer roles file under SOC code 15-1252 (Software Developers). Use the OFLC Wage Search to filter active LCA certifications by that code and location, so you're targeting employers with documented H-1B filing history for your exact role type.
Find verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to search iOS Developer jobs filtered by employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history. This removes companies that list sponsorship as possible but have no DOL record of actually filing for software development roles.
Ask about cap-exempt employer status early
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with higher education, and certain research institutions are cap-exempt, meaning they can file year-round without lottery risk. Confirm an employer's cap-exempt status before accepting an offer if lottery timing is a concern for your situation.
Confirm the LCA wage level matches your experience
DOL assigns wage levels I through IV based on experience and complexity. An employer filing at Level I for a senior iOS role signals a potential prevailing wage issue. Check the OFLC Wage Search for the posted wage before signing an offer letter.
Time your job search around the April lottery window
USCIS opens H-1B registration in March for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, confirm your authorization end date covers the gap. Employers filing for cap-subject roles need your petition ready before the registration window opens, not after you've accepted the offer.
H-1B Visa iOS Developer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does iOS Developer qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B?
Yes. iOS Developer roles meet the specialty occupation standard because the work typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. USCIS evaluates the specific job duties, not just the title, so your employer's petition needs to clearly describe tasks that require that theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge.
How do I find employers who actually sponsor H-1B visas for iOS developers?
Use Migrate Mate to search iOS Developer roles filtered by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history. Many companies list visa sponsorship as available in job postings but have no DOL record of actually filing for software development roles. LCA disclosure data shows which employers have filed certified applications for roles in your SOC code, giving you a factual basis for targeting your search.
Can I switch iOS Developer jobs while on H-1B without losing status?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. If you've had an approved or pending H-1B petition for at least 180 days, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf. The new role must be in the same or a similar occupational classification, which for iOS development typically means another software developer role under the same SOC code.
What happens to my H-1B status if my iOS Developer role is eliminated in a layoff?
Your H-1B status is tied to the sponsoring employer, so a layoff ends your authorized period of stay. USCIS provides a 60-day grace period to find a new employer willing to file an H-1B transfer, change to another valid status, or prepare to depart. Acting within the first two to three weeks is practical because an employer needs time to prepare and file a transfer petition before the grace period expires.
Does contract or staffing agency employment affect H-1B sponsorship for iOS developers?
It can complicate the petition. USCIS scrutinizes third-party placement arrangements because the agency must demonstrate it will maintain an employer-employee relationship, including the right to control your daily work. If you're placed at a client site, USCIS may issue an RFE questioning who directs your tasks. Confirm that any staffing arrangement includes an itinerary of specific projects and a clear chain of supervisory authority before the petition is filed.
