H-1B Visa Mobile App Developer Jobs
Mobile app developers qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship under the specialty occupation standard, which requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Employers file the Labor Condition Application with DOL before petitioning USCIS, and the annual cap means timing your job search around the April lottery window matters.

Align your degree to your stack
USCIS scrutinizes whether your specific degree field matches your role. A computer science or software engineering degree maps cleanly to mobile development. If your degree is in a different field, document coursework and experience that bridges the gap before applying.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to find employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for mobile developer roles. Prior LCA filings signal an established H-1B sponsorship process, reducing the risk of an employer backing out mid-petition due to unfamiliarity with the process.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and work location before salary talks. Your employer's LCA must certify they'll pay at least the prevailing wage, so knowing that floor strengthens your negotiating position.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment for STEM roles
If you're currently on OPT and targeting STEM OPT extension, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm enrollment before accepting an offer, not after, to avoid losing your STEM OPT eligibility window while waiting on employer compliance.
Use O*NET to document specialty occupation
Pull the O*NET occupation profile for Software Developers and Mobile Applications before your petition is filed. It lists degree requirements and specialized knowledge expectations that your employer can cite directly in the I-129 to support the specialty occupation classification.
Time your offer letter for cap filing windows
H-1B cap petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer in, say, July, your employer can't file until the following April. Negotiate a delayed start or contract arrangement to bridge that gap without losing the role.
H-1B Visa Mobile App Developer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does mobile app development qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Mobile app development qualifies when the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. USCIS evaluates the specific job duties, not just the title. Roles involving architecture design, SDK integration, or platform-specific frameworks like Swift or Kotlin typically satisfy the specialty occupation standard more clearly than generalist support roles.
Which employers commonly sponsor H-1B visas for mobile app developers?
Employers across fintech, healthcare tech, enterprise software, and consumer app companies regularly file H-1B petitions for mobile developers. The strongest signal is whether a company has an established immigration process, which you can assess by reviewing their DOL Labor Condition Application filing history. Migrate Mate filters employers by LCA filing history so you can focus on companies that have actually sponsored this role type before.
Can I switch from iOS to Android development and keep my H-1B status?
You can switch platforms within the same employer without a new H-1B petition as long as your duties remain consistent with the originally approved role. If the change represents a material change in job duties, your employer needs to file an amended petition with USCIS. A shift from, say, frontend mobile work to full-stack backend engineering would likely require an amendment.
How does contract or staffing agency employment affect H-1B sponsorship for mobile developers?
Working through a staffing agency on a third-party client site is permitted under H-1B rules, but USCIS applies stricter scrutiny to these arrangements. The agency is the petitioner and must demonstrate it controls your day-to-day work. End-client letters are often required during the petition. Some developers find direct-hire roles easier to navigate because the employer relationship is cleaner for USCIS purposes.
What happens to my H-1B status if my employer's app project is cancelled?
If your employer eliminates the role or project, your H-1B status remains valid but your authorized employment ends. You have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, file a change of status, or depart. A new employer can file a cap-exempt transfer petition, letting you start work as soon as USCIS receives it, not just after approval.
