Verify your degree maps to the role
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation claims for sysadmin roles because some employers list them as general IT positions. Pull the O*NET profile for System Administrators to document the direct connection between your degree field and the job duties.
Target E-Verify enrolled employers early
If you're on OPT or STEM OPT, your employer must be E-Verify enrolled before you start. Confirm enrollment status during the offer stage, not after signing, to avoid a gap in work authorization.
Search LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter by System Administrator roles to see which employers have certified LCAs with DOL. This tells you which companies have actively sponsored this position before, narrowing your list to realistic H-1B prospects.
Check the prevailing wage before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Level I through Level IV wages for your metro area before your offer call. Your employer's LCA must certify at least the applicable wage level, so knowing the floor strengthens your negotiation.
Prepare for an RFE on specialty occupation
Sysadmin petitions draw higher Request for Evidence rates than software engineering roles. Gather job postings from your employer's past hires, your transcripts, and any certifications showing the role requires a specific bachelor's-level field before your employer files.
Plan your timeline around cap registration
USCIS opens H-1B cap registration in March for an October 1 start date. If you're not selected, your 60-day grace period after OPT expiration gives you a window to secure a cap-exempt employer or pursue a cap-exempt role at a university or nonprofit.
H-1B Visa System Administrator: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a System Administrator role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, but the employer must demonstrate the position normally requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as computer science or information systems. Generic IT job descriptions that accept any degree field can trigger a USCIS specialty occupation challenge. Ask your employer to tailor the job posting and support letter to reflect the degree-specific nature of the work before filing.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for System Administrator positions?
Employers across technology, healthcare, finance, and higher education regularly file H-1B petitions for System Administrators. Universities and nonprofit research institutions are cap-exempt, meaning they can file year-round outside the lottery. Use Migrate Mate to filter System Administrator roles by employers with verified LCA filing history so you're applying to companies that have sponsored this position before.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer for a System Administrator role?
Yes. Under H-1B portability, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for approval. The new employer still needs to file an LCA with DOL certifying the prevailing wage for your location and job level. Your prior approval notice and pay stubs from the sponsoring employer support the transfer petition.
What happens to my H-1B status if my System Administrator role is reclassified or eliminated?
Your H-1B is tied to the specific employer and role. If your position is materially changed or eliminated, your status is affected. You have a 60-day grace period after involuntary termination to find a new sponsoring employer, change status, or depart. Filing a transfer petition before the grace period expires preserves your work authorization while the new petition is pending.
Do certifications like MCSA or CompTIA help my H-1B petition as a System Administrator?
They support your case but don't substitute for the degree requirement. USCIS evaluates whether the role itself requires a specific bachelor's-level education, not whether you hold additional credentials. Certifications help document your expertise and can strengthen a Request for Evidence response, but your employer's petition must still establish that the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field.
