Solution Engineer roles sit at the intersection of technical depth and client-facing communication, which makes them strong candidates for H-1B visa specialty occupation classification. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Solution Engineer
Map your degree to the role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the Solution Engineer position. A computer science or engineering degree maps cleanly, but an unrelated degree needs supporting coursework or credentials to establish the specialty occupation connection.
Use OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
Pull the prevailing wage for your SOC code and metro area using OFLC Wage Search before you get to offer stage. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above that level, so knowing the floor strengthens your negotiation and avoids surprises.
Target employers with active LCA filings
Filter your job search on Migrate Mate by employers who have filed LCAs for Solution Engineer or closely related titles. Past filings signal that the company already understands the H-1B process and won't stall at the sponsorship conversation.
Clarify the cap-subject status early
Ask recruiters whether the role is at a cap-exempt institution, such as a university, nonprofit research org, or government entity. Cap-exempt employers can file outside the annual lottery window, which matters if you're approaching your OPT end date.
Get the job description in writing before filing
USCIS scrutinizes Solution Engineer petitions for specialty occupation evidence. A vague job description listing soft skills over technical requirements is a common RFE trigger. Push your employer to document the degree requirement explicitly in the offer letter and I-129 support materials.
Account for the 60-day grace period in your timeline
If you're transitioning from a prior H-1B employer, you have a 60-day grace period after your last day to secure a new H-1B. Your new employer's I-129 must be filed before that window closes, so build the timeline with that deadline in mind.
H-1B Visa Solution Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Solution Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS evaluates specialty occupation based on whether the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Solution Engineer roles that require a computer science, engineering, or information systems degree consistently meet this standard. Roles where any bachelor's degree is accepted, regardless of field, face more scrutiny and may require additional documentation to support the petition.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Solution Engineer jobs?
SaaS companies, cloud platform providers, and enterprise software firms are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for Solution Engineer roles because the position is standard across their go-to-market teams. You can browse verified H-1B-sponsoring employers hiring for this title on Migrate Mate, which filters results by employers with documented LCA filing history for the role.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect Solution Engineer offers?
Your employer must certify on the LCA that your salary meets the DOL prevailing wage for the Solution Engineer SOC code in your work location. The wage level depends on your experience tier, with Level I being entry and Level IV being fully competent. You can verify the applicable wage using OFLC Wage Search before your offer is finalized to confirm the number your employer will certify.
Can a Solution Engineer on OPT transfer directly to H-1B with the same employer?
Yes. If you're working as a Solution Engineer on OPT and your employer files an H-1B petition before the April 1 filing window, cap-gap protection extends your work authorization through the end of OPT and into the H-1B period starting October 1. Your employer files the I-129 and you don't need to change jobs, though the petition must include a job description matching your current role.
What documentation strengthens an H-1B petition for a Solution Engineer position?
The strongest petitions include a detailed job description explicitly requiring a relevant degree, evidence that the employer treats the role as requiring specialized technical knowledge, and your academic transcripts showing a degree in a field directly tied to the work. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a recognized service helps USCIS confirm equivalency. Technical certifications can supplement but don't replace the degree requirement.
