Document your degree field alignment
USCIS scrutinizes whether your degree directly relates to epidemiology work. A degree in a adjacent field like biostatistics or biology needs supporting evidence tying coursework to disease surveillance or study design, gather transcripts and course descriptions before applying.
Target cap-exempt employers strategically
Federal contractors, nonprofit research institutes, and universities affiliated with teaching hospitals can file H-1B petitions year-round without entering the annual lottery. Epidemiologist roles at CDC-affiliated institutions and NIH-funded research centers frequently fall into this category.
Search LCA filings by SOC code
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by the Epidemiologist SOC code, so you see which organizations have active H-1B Labor Condition Application history for this exact role rather than guessing at sponsorship willingness from job postings.
Verify prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Pull the OFLC Wage Search for your work location and the Epidemiologist occupation code before accepting an offer. Your employer's LCA must certify at least the Level I prevailing wage, and knowing the tiers helps you assess whether an offer will clear DOL requirements.
Confirm specialty occupation language in the offer letter
Ask your employer to specify in the offer letter that the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in epidemiology or a directly related field. Vague language like 'science background preferred' has triggered USCIS Requests for Evidence on I-129 petitions for research and public health roles.
Account for concurrent filing if on OPT
If your OPT expires before October 1 and your H-1B is selected in the lottery, cap-gap rules extend your work authorization automatically through September 30. Notify your employer's HR team early so they don't mistakenly pause your assignment during that bridge period.
H-1B Visa Epidemiologist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Epidemiologist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS recognizes epidemiology as a specialty occupation because the work theoretically and practically requires at least a bachelor's degree in epidemiology, public health, or a closely related discipline. Roles focused on disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, or clinical trial analysis consistently meet the specialty occupation standard, though your employer's job description must reflect that degree requirement explicitly.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Epidemiologists?
Federal and state public health agencies, academic medical centers, nonprofit research institutes, pharmaceutical companies, and health insurance organizations are the most active H-1B sponsors for epidemiology roles. Many of these employers are cap-exempt or operate under cap-exempt affiliations, meaning they can file outside the annual lottery window. You can browse verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate filtered specifically to this occupation.
How does the H-1B lottery affect Epidemiologist job seekers?
If your target employer is a for-profit company without a university or nonprofit affiliation, your petition enters the annual lottery capped at 85,000 slots. Registration opens each March for an October 1 start date. One practical workaround is prioritizing cap-exempt employers, such as NIH-funded research centers or public health schools, where petitions can be filed at any time of year.
What prevailing wage level applies to Epidemiologist H-1B petitions?
The DOL assigns four prevailing wage levels for each occupation and location. Entry-level or data-support epidemiology roles typically fall at Level I or II, while senior researchers or program directors with specialized expertise may qualify at Level III or IV. Your employer determines the appropriate level and must certify it on the LCA filed with DOL. You can verify current wage levels using the OFLC Wage Search for your specific metro area.
Can a foreign-trained epidemiology degree support an H-1B petition?
Yes, but the degree must be evaluated as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree or higher in epidemiology or a directly related field. A credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization is typically required. Three-year degrees from some countries may need supplemental coursework or relevant work experience to reach equivalency. USCIS reviews the evaluation as part of the I-129 adjudication, so a thorough evaluation from the outset reduces the likelihood of a Request for Evidence.
