Verify your PT license transfers across states
H-1B approval doesn't guarantee you can practice in your employer's state. Confirm your foreign PT credentials are accepted by the state licensing board before signing an offer, since licensing delays can push back your start date and complicate the I-129 filing timeline.
Target employers with cap-exempt H-1B status
University athletic departments and nonprofit hospital systems affiliated with higher education are often cap-exempt, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without entering the annual lottery. This significantly shortens your path from offer to authorization.
Search LCA filing history by occupation code
Sports PT roles typically file under SOC code 29-1123. Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by that occupation code and see verified DOL Labor Condition Application filing history, so you're targeting companies that have actually sponsored this role before.
Confirm specialty occupation framing in your offer letter
USCIS scrutinizes PT roles because some positions accept associate-level candidates. Your offer letter should explicitly state a bachelor's degree in physical therapy or a related field is required. A vague job description increases the risk of a Request for Evidence.
Check the prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage meeting DOL's prevailing wage for your role and location. Run your job title and ZIP code through the OFLC Wage Search before you negotiate, so your offer lands at or above the required threshold from day one.
Use premium processing if your start date is tight
Standard I-129 processing can run several months. If your employer's season, clinical contract, or training camp has a firm start date, request premium processing through USCIS to get a decision within 15 business days and protect your timeline.

Find Sports Physical Therapist JobsSports Physical Therapist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Sports Physical Therapist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS recognizes physical therapy as a specialty occupation because it requires at minimum a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree or an equivalent bachelor's-level credential in the field. The key is that your offer letter and the employer's LCA explicitly state this degree requirement for the specific role, not just as a preference.
Which types of employers are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for Sports Physical Therapists?
Professional sports organizations, Division I university athletic departments, hospital-based sports medicine programs, and large orthopedic or rehabilitation clinic groups are the most active H-1B sponsors in this field. University affiliates are particularly valuable because they may qualify as cap-exempt, letting them file outside the annual lottery. Browse verified filing histories on Migrate Mate to identify these employers by location and occupation code.
How does state PT licensure interact with the H-1B petition process?
USCIS requires evidence that you meet all state licensure requirements for the role. If you haven't yet obtained a state PT license, your employer will typically include a letter confirming you're in the process, alongside your foreign credential evaluation. Delays in state board approval can push back your petition timeline, so start the licensure application as early as possible after receiving your offer.
Can a Sports Physical Therapist working for a professional team switch employers mid-season on H-1B?
Yes, H-1B portability under AC21 allows you to change employers if your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition before your current authorized period ends. You can begin working for the new employer once the transfer petition is received by USCIS. Team-to-team moves are common, but the receiving organization must file a new LCA and I-129 regardless of how similar the roles are.
What does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement mean for a Sports PT position?
Before filing your H-1B petition, your employer submits an LCA to DOL certifying that your offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for physical therapists in your work location. DOL sets this wage using the OFLC Wage Search, which looks up regional wage data for your SOC code. Employers who offer below the prevailing wage cannot legally file an LCA, so this floor protects both you and the integrity of the sponsorship.
