Verify your NCCAA certification before applying
USCIS requires proof of licensure and national certification for AA roles. Confirm your NCCAA certification is current and that your master's degree transcripts are ready to attach to a petition before you start outreach to employers.
Target anesthesia groups billing under hospital contracts
Hospital-employed AA positions and contracted anesthesia groups both file H-1B petitions, but large anesthesia practices often move faster than hospital HR departments. Search Migrate Mate to filter employers with active H-1B LCA filings specifically for AA or anesthesiologist assistant job codes.
Check state licensure requirements before accepting offers
Only about half of U.S. states license AAs independently. An employer can file your H-1B petition in a state where AAs can't legally practice, so confirm the state's AA licensure status and your eligibility before the offer letter is drafted.
Confirm your employer will file before the March registration window
USCIS opens H-1B registration in March each year for the October 1 cap. If your employer hasn't assigned immigration counsel or started OFLC Wage Search documentation by February, your petition may miss the cycle entirely.
Request prevailing wage documentation from your employer
DOL requires the LCA to certify a wage at or above the prevailing level for your SOC code and work location. Ask your employer to pull your wage level from the OFLC Wage Search before the offer letter is finalized so your compensation is already compliant.
Understand cap-exempt employer options if you miss the lottery
Hospitals affiliated with accredited medical schools qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers under USCIS rules. If you don't get selected in the annual lottery, a role at a qualifying academic medical center lets you file outside the cap at any time.
H-1B Visa Anesthesiologist Assistant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Anesthesiologist Assistant role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS treats Anesthesiologist Assistant as a specialty occupation because the role requires a master's degree from an accredited AA program as a standard industry requirement. Your employer will document this in the H-1B petition, typically citing national accreditation standards and the academic prerequisites set by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Anesthesiologist Assistants?
Academic medical centers, large hospital systems, and contracted anesthesia groups are the most active H-1B sponsors for AA roles. Cap-exempt academic medical centers can file at any time, while private anesthesia practices must file during the annual April lottery window. You can browse employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for AA roles on Migrate Mate.
How does state licensure affect my H-1B petition as an Anesthesiologist Assistant?
State licensure is a condition of H-1B approval for AAs. Not all states have enacted AA practice acts, so USCIS expects the petition to demonstrate you can legally practice in the state where the job is located. If your target state doesn't license AAs, your petition will likely face a Request for Evidence or denial regardless of your credentials.
Can an Anesthesiologist Assistant work at multiple sites on one H-1B petition?
Your employer must file a separate LCA with DOL for each worksite location, including hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and any facility where you provide services. If you'll rotate across multiple locations, confirm your employer is filing location-specific LCAs before you start. Working at an uncovered site can create compliance issues for both you and the employer.
What happens to my H-1B status if the anesthesia group loses its hospital contract?
If your employer loses the contract that funds your position, your H-1B authorization doesn't automatically transfer. You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new sponsoring employer, change status, or depart the U.S. A new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before your grace period expires to maintain lawful status.
