H-1B Visa Medical Technologist Jobs
Medical Technologist roles qualify as H-1B visa specialty occupations because USCIS requires at least a bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or a related field. Most hospital and reference lab employers sponsor H-1B visa petitions, and the occupation's consistent shortage classification keeps sponsorship common across health systems nationwide.

Verify your ASCP credential before applying
USCIS adjudicators scrutinize Medical Technologist petitions closely. Having your ASCP Board of Certification or equivalent credential in hand before you apply strengthens the specialty occupation argument and reduces the chance of a Request for Evidence.
Target health systems with H-1B filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified LCA filing history for clinical laboratory roles. Health systems filing consistently for Medical Technologists signal an in-house HR process already familiar with the petition requirements.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating an offer
Your employer must certify an LCA at the correct DOL wage level. Run your specific job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before salary discussions so you know which wage tier applies to your role.
Ask about cap-exempt employer eligibility early
Hospitals affiliated with a university or nonprofit research institution may qualify as cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B petition can be filed outside the annual lottery. Confirm the employer's cap-exempt status during the offer stage, not after signing.
Align your start date with the October 1 cap window
If you're subject to the H-1B cap, USCIS only accepts petitions starting April 1 for an October 1 employment start. Build your job search timeline backward from that window so your offer, LCA, and filing dates align without a gap in authorization.
Document clinical hours to support specialty occupation
Some RFEs for Medical Technologist petitions challenge whether the role meets the specialty occupation standard. Collect official job descriptions, degree requirement language from the employer's own postings, and your O*NET occupation profile to support the filing.
H-1B Visa Medical Technologist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Medical Technologist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS recognizes Medical Technologist as a specialty occupation because the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or a closely related biological science. If the employer's job description lists a bachelor's degree in a specific field as a minimum requirement, the role meets the specialty occupation threshold. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree regardless of field are harder to qualify.
Which employers commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Technologists?
Large hospital systems, academic medical centers, national reference laboratories, and federally qualified health centers file the most LCA petitions for Medical Technologist roles. Academic medical centers and nonprofit hospital affiliates sometimes qualify as cap-exempt employers, which removes the lottery requirement entirely. You can search employers with verified filing history for this occupation directly on Migrate Mate.
What happens to my H-1B status if my hospital employer is acquired or restructured?
A corporate acquisition or merger that results in a successor-in-interest employer may allow H-1B status to continue without a new petition if the terms and conditions of employment stay materially the same. If the acquiring entity is not a successor-in-interest, your employer must file an amended H-1B petition before the change takes effect. Confirm the legal structure of any transaction with your employer's immigration counsel immediately.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Medical Technologist position at a different hospital?
Yes, through H-1B portability. Once USCIS has approved or has pending a valid H-1B petition for you, you can begin working for a new employer as soon as that employer files a new H-1B transfer petition on your behalf. You don't need to wait for approval before starting, but the new employer must file before your current authorized period ends.
Does my state laboratory license affect H-1B sponsorship eligibility?
State licensure requirements vary. Some states require Medical Technologists to hold a state-issued clinical laboratory license in addition to ASCP certification. If your state has a licensure requirement, USCIS expects the employer's H-1B petition to address it. An employer who files before your state license is issued may need to include evidence that you meet all other requirements and are actively pursuing licensure.
