Align your degree field with the product domain
USCIS requires your bachelor's or higher to directly relate to the role. A biochemistry or bioengineering degree supporting a sequencing instrument role is a clean match. A general biology degree supporting a proteomics platform may draw an RFE, so document the course-level alignment in your petition.
Check LCA filings before applying anywhere
Use the OFLC Wage Search to confirm a company has filed LCAs under SOC code 19-1099 or 15-2051 before you invest time in their process. No prior filings doesn't mean they won't sponsor, but it signals you'll need to educate their HR team.
Target companies enrolled in E-Verify first
E-Verify enrollment is required for federal contractors and STEM OPT employers, so companies already enrolled move through the onboarding side of H-1B sponsorship faster. Filter your search on Migrate Mate to surface employers with verified sponsorship and LCA filing history in your target instrument category.
Document your field demo and applications experience concretely
The specialty occupation requirement depends on your petition showing the role needs a specific degree, not just any science background. List every instrument platform, assay type, or software tool you've supported by name in your resume so the attorney can build a precise job duties description.
Clarify territory structure before your 60-day clock starts
Field Application Scientists often cover multi-state territories. If your role changes geography or reporting structure after your I-129 is filed, your employer may need to amend the petition. Confirm the work location language in the LCA matches where you'll actually be placed during the first year.
Request premium processing if your start date is fixed
Field roles tied to product launch cycles or fiscal-quarter headcount plans often have hard start dates. USCIS premium processing guarantees a 15-business-day adjudication on the I-129. If your employer pushes back on the cost, note that the expedite fee can be paid by the employee under current rules.

Find Field Application Scientist JobsField Application Scientist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Field Application Scientist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS evaluates whether the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Field Application Scientists at life science, genomics, and analytical instrumentation companies typically require degrees in biochemistry, molecular biology, bioengineering, or a closely related field, which satisfies the specialty occupation standard. Roles at broader technology distributors may require stronger documentation if the job description is less technically specific.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Field Application Scientists?
Genomics and next-generation sequencing companies, flow cytometry instrument makers, mass spectrometry vendors, and clinical diagnostics manufacturers file LCAs for this role regularly. You can confirm which employers have active filing histories using the OFLC Wage Search before you apply. Migrate Mate also surfaces this data filtered by role so you don't have to pull raw DOL disclosure files manually.
Can I switch Field Application Scientist employers while on H-1B without losing status?
Yes, under H-1B portability rules established by AC21, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've been in lawful status. The new employer must file before your current authorized stay expires. Your specialty occupation documentation carries over conceptually, but the new petition covers the new role and location.
How does territory-based travel affect my H-1B status as a Field Application Scientist?
H-1B status ties to the worksite locations listed in your LCA. Field roles covering multiple states require a blanket LCA or multiple LCAs covering each metro area where you work more than sporadically. If your territory expands significantly after filing, your employer should amend the petition. Short-term travel to client sites not listed in the LCA is generally permissible under DOL rules for itinerant workers.
What O*NET classification applies to Field Application Scientists and why does it matter?
Most Field Application Scientist roles are classified under O*NET job zones 4 or 5, which require significant preparation and a specific degree background. The O*NET profile your employer uses in the LCA determines the prevailing wage level USCIS and DOL evaluate against the offered salary. Using the wrong SOC code, such as a general sales code instead of a life or physical scientist code, can weaken the specialty occupation argument and invite RFEs.
