H-1B Visa Home Inspector Jobs
Home Inspector roles can qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, or a related specialty field. Employers in inspection services, real estate, and government contracting do file LCAs for these roles, though the specialty occupation argument requires careful documentation of degree requirements.

Verify your role meets specialty occupation
Home Inspector positions vary widely. Roles tied to structural engineering assessments, code compliance review, or forensic inspection are stronger H-1B candidates than general home inspection. Pull the O*NET profile for SOC 13-1041 to document the degree requirement argument before applying.
Target employers who already file LCAs
Engineering firms, environmental consultancies, and federal contractors that employ inspection staff are more likely to have H-1B infrastructure in place. Search the OFLC Wage Search to find employers who have filed LCAs for inspection-related occupations before approaching them.
Get your state license before the offer
Most states require a home inspection license tied to a physical address and background check. USCIS will expect your credentials to be in order at petition time, so secure your state license while you're still on an active work status rather than waiting until after an offer.
Use Migrate Mate to filter sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with active H-1B LCA filing history in inspection and engineering roles. Filtering by DOL filing data saves you from targeting companies that have never filed a sponsorship petition for this occupation.
Negotiate who covers USCIS filing fees
USCIS prohibits passing the I-129 filing fee to the employee, but premium processing is negotiable. Confirm in writing before signing any offer letter which fees the employer covers, since inspection firms new to sponsorship sometimes misunderstand the fee-payment rules.
Prepare for the specialty occupation RFE
USCIS frequently issues Requests for Evidence on Home Inspector petitions questioning whether the role truly requires a specialty degree. Have your employer document that degree-level knowledge is necessary for the specific inspection scope, not just preferred, before the petition is filed.

Find Home Inspector JobsHome Inspector H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Home Inspector role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the role is defined. A general home inspection position often won't qualify because the job can be performed without a bachelor's degree. Roles framed around structural engineering analysis, code compliance, or environmental assessment have a stronger argument. Your employer needs to document that a specific bachelor's degree in a related field is the normal minimum requirement for the position, not just a preference.
Which employers typically sponsor H-1B visas for Home Inspector positions?
Engineering and environmental consulting firms, federal contractors, and large property management companies are the most common sponsors. These employers already have legal infrastructure for H-1B filings. Smaller independent inspection companies rarely sponsor because the administrative cost is high relative to their size. You can find employers with verified LCA filing history for inspection roles on Migrate Mate.
Do I need a state home inspection license before my H-1B petition is filed?
USCIS expects you to hold any required state licenses at the time the petition is approved, not necessarily at filing. That said, securing your license early strengthens the petition by confirming you meet all requirements for the role. Because most states require a background check and sometimes a probationary inspection period, starting the licensing process before your petition is filed is the practical approach.
How does prevailing wage apply to H-1B Home Inspector jobs?
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application certifying they'll pay you at least the prevailing wage for the inspection occupation in your work location. The wage is determined using DOL wage data, and the specific SOC code your employer selects matters significantly since engineering-adjacent inspection roles are classified differently than general inspectors. You can verify wage levels for your location using the OFLC Wage Search.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new inspection employer mid-status?
Yes, under H-1B portability rules you can start working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed with USCIS, as long as your prior status was lawful and the petition is non-frivolous. The new employer must file a fresh LCA for the role and location. The specialty occupation documentation requirement applies again, so your new employer needs to frame the position carefully if the role description differs from your prior petition.
