- Develop automation and self-service capabilities to reduce manual operational effort and improve the user experience.
- Support production HPC environments, including incident response, solve, root cause analysis, service restoration, and continuous improvement.
- Work directly with engineering users to improve job scheduling behavior, workload performance, resource utilization, and platform efficiency.
- Develop and maintain scripts, tools, and automation frameworks using Python, Bash, and related technologies.
- Support modernization initiatives involving containers, Kubernetes, Docker, cloud-native services, Infrastructure as Code, and alternative scheduling or orchestration technologies.
- Contribute to cloud HPC integration across AWS, GCP, Azure, OpenStack, and hybrid environments.
- Collaborate with platform, cloud, storage, infrastructure, networking, and security teams to deliver robust engineering services.
- Contribute to project delivery by working with technical leads, architects, project managers, and operational team members.
- Help define and promote standards for DevOps, SRE, platform engineering, CI/CD, monitoring, and infrastructure automation.
Required Skills and Experience
- Experience operating HPC environments and job schedulers such as IBM Spectrum LSF, Slurm, PBS, Grid Engine, or similar.
- Strong Linux system administration experience, preferably with RHEL or RHEL-based distributions.
- Good scripting and automation skills using Python, Bash, Shell, or similar languages.
- Experience supporting production infrastructure, including incident management, solve, operational recovery, and conducting RCA or comparable experience.
- Familiarity with monitoring, alerting, and observability platforms such as Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar.
- Experience building, maintaining, or supporting CI/CD pipelines and automation frameworks.
- Experience with public, private, or hybrid cloud platforms, including AWS, GCP, Azure, OpenStack, and Kubernetes-based services.
- Understanding of DevOps, SRE, platform engineering, infrastructure automation, and operational excellence principles.
- Familiarity with Agile delivery practices and collaboration tools such as Jira and Confluence.
- Ability to work with engineering users, understand workload requirements, and translate operational issues into practical improvements.
Desirable Experience
- Experience working in EDA or semiconductor engineering environments.
- Familiarity with EDA tools, license-aware scheduling, large-scale batch workloads, and engineering compute workflows.
- Exposure to container platforms and orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Kubernetes-native scheduling.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
- Exposure to alternative schedulers such as Slurm or cloud-native workload orchestration systems.
- Experience using AI-assisted tooling, MCP, agentic services, or automation agents to improve diagnostics, operations, optimization, or self-service support.
- Experience operating large-scale distributed systems across both on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
Salary Range:
$130,100-$176,000 per year
We value people as individuals and our dedication is to reward people competitively and equitably for the work they do and the skills and experience they bring to Arm. Salary is only one component of Arm's offering. The total reward package will be shared with candidates during the recruitment and selection process.

Verify your SOC code before filing
HPC Engineer roles get classified under different SOC codes depending on whether the work is hardware-focused or software-focused. Confirm the classification with your employer early, since the SOC code determines the prevailing wage tier USCIS expects to see on the LCA.
Pull prevailing wage data for your cluster architecture
HPC work spans entry-level cluster administration to senior parallel algorithm design, and wage levels vary significantly. Run your specific job duties through the OFLC Wage Search before your employer files the LCA to catch any mismatch before it becomes an RFE.
Target employers with active HPC infrastructure
National labs, defense contractors, financial modeling firms, and hyperscalers all run dedicated HPC environments and file H-1B petitions regularly. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified H-1B filing history in engineering and computing roles relevant to your background.
Document proprietary toolchain experience precisely
USCIS adjudicators reviewing HPC petitions look for degree-field alignment. A support letter that ties your specific experience with MPI, OpenMP, or GPU cluster optimization directly to a bachelor's-level requirement in computer science or engineering significantly reduces RFE risk.
Ask about cap-exempt employer status upfront
Universities, affiliated research organizations, and some national labs are cap-exempt, meaning your petition bypasses the annual lottery entirely. If you're open to academic or government-adjacent HPC roles, confirming cap-exempt status during the offer stage can change your entire filing timeline.
Time your job search around the H-1B registration window
Cap-subject H-1B registrations open in March each year for an October 1 start date. If you're not already in H-1B status, securing an offer and completing the LCA before the registration window closes is the critical path. Missing it means waiting a full year.
H-1B Visa Hpc Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does HPC engineer qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. HPC engineering requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a closely related field, which meets the specialty occupation standard USCIS applies. Employers typically document the degree requirement in the LCA and support letter by referencing the technical complexity of parallel computing architecture and the specific tools the role demands.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for HPC engineers?
National laboratories, aerospace and defense contractors, financial services firms running quantitative modeling, cloud hyperscalers, and academic research institutions are the primary H-1B sponsors for HPC roles. These employers typically maintain long-term HPC infrastructure and file petitions on a recurring basis. Migrate Mate lets you search for employers with verified H-1B filing history in relevant engineering and computing categories.
What SOC code is typically used for an HPC engineer H-1B petition?
The two most common classifications are 15-1252 (Software Developers) when the role centers on parallel algorithm development and optimization, and 17-2061 (Computer Hardware Engineers) when it involves cluster hardware design or integration. The distinction matters because each SOC code has a separate prevailing wage determination under DOL guidelines, and the petition must be internally consistent across the LCA and support letter.
Can an HPC engineer role at a national lab avoid the H-1B lottery?
Yes, if the national lab qualifies as a cap-exempt institution. Universities and affiliated nonprofit or government research organizations are exempt from the 85,000-cap lottery, which means petitions can be filed at any time of year and take effect immediately upon approval rather than waiting for October 1. Confirm cap-exempt status with the employer's legal team before accepting an offer.
What documentation strengthens an H-1B petition for an HPC engineer?
A strong petition ties the specific job duties directly to a required degree field. For HPC roles, that means documenting work that requires applied knowledge of parallel computing theory, systems architecture, or numerical methods at a level only achievable through a relevant bachelor's or higher degree. Employer support letters that reference specific tools, cluster environments, and performance benchmarks give adjudicators the technical specificity needed to approve without issuing an RFE.
