H-1B Visa Drupal Developer Jobs
Drupal Developer roles qualify as H-1B visa specialty occupations because they require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Employers filing H-1B petitions for this role must certify prevailing wage compliance through a Labor Condition Application before USCIS adjudicates the petition.

Document your Drupal-specific technical credentials
Compile certifications, contributed modules, and Drupal.org profile activity before applying. USCIS adjudicators evaluating specialty occupation require evidence your role demands a directly related degree, not just general web development experience.
Verify your job title against the LCA
Once you have an offer, confirm the employer's LCA lists a Drupal or web developer SOC code that matches your actual duties. A mismatch between the LCA job title and your offer letter can trigger an RFE.
Target employers with active CMS filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter for companies that have filed H-1B LCAs for developer roles. Employers with documented CMS and Drupal filings already understand the specialty occupation argument, which shortens the sponsorship conversation.
Check prevailing wage tiers before negotiating
Look up your target role's wage level using the OFLC Wage Search before salary discussions. Your offered wage must meet at least Level I for the SOC code in your work location, and many Drupal roles land at Level II or III.
Ask whether the employer uses premium processing
USCIS premium processing reduces adjudication to 15 business days. For contract-driven Drupal projects with defined start dates, ask during negotiation whether the employer will elect premium processing on your I-129 petition.
Use the 60-day grace period strategically
If your current H-1B employment ends, USCIS allows a 60-day grace period to secure a new employer's transfer petition. Don't wait until day 50 to pursue leads; a new employer needs time to file the I-129 before your grace period lapses.
H-1B Visa Drupal Developer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Drupal Developer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information systems, software engineering, or a directly related field. USCIS evaluates the job duties, not just the title. If the role requires a specific technical degree and your employer can document that, the specialty occupation threshold is met. Generic roles accepting any bachelor's degree regardless of field carry more RFE risk.
How do I find employers who have sponsored H-1B visas for Drupal Developer roles?
Browse Migrate Mate, which surfaces employer H-1B LCA filing history by occupation code so you can see which companies have sponsored developer roles in the past. Employers with a track record of filing for CMS and web development positions are far more likely to sponsor new candidates without requiring extensive internal approval processes.
What SOC code do employers typically use when filing an H-1B for a Drupal Developer?
Most employers file under SOC 15-1252 (Software Developers) or 15-1299 (Web and Digital Interface Designers), depending on how the role's duties are weighted. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage your employer must certify on the Labor Condition Application. You can cross-reference the O*NET occupation profile for each code to see which better matches your actual job duties before the LCA is filed.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I'm already working as a Drupal Developer?
Yes. Under H-1B portability, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a non-frivolous I-129 transfer petition, provided you're maintaining valid H-1B status. You don't need to wait for USCIS approval before your start date. Confirm the new employer's LCA covers the same or a substantially similar Drupal Developer role to avoid complications at adjudication.
Does working as a freelance or contract Drupal Developer affect H-1B eligibility?
H-1B status requires an employer-employee relationship, which means a single sponsoring employer must control your work, set your hours, and supervise your output. Short-term contracting through a staffing agency is permissible if the agency is the H-1B petitioner and places you at client sites, but self-employment or independent contracting without a sponsoring employer does not qualify. Staffing-agency placements are common in Drupal development but require the agency to file, not the end client.
