Frame your MDM credentials around specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to align directly with the role. A background in information systems, data architecture, or computer science maps cleanly. A business degree alone may trigger an RFE, so document how your coursework supports MDM-specific functions.
Use O*NET to anchor your job description
The O*NET occupation profile for database administrators and architects defines the technical duties USCIS expects to see. Ask your employer to mirror that language in the job duties section of your petition to reduce specialty occupation challenges.
Target employers with existing MDM infrastructure
Companies already running Informatica, SAP MDG, or IBM InfoSphere are far more likely to sponsor because they need specialized skills, not generalists. Search Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified H-1B LCA filings in data management and information systems roles.
Verify the prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Run your role through the OFLC Wage Search before negotiations so you know the minimum your offer must meet.
Clarify multi-site work arrangements early
MDM projects often span multiple client sites or office locations. Each worksite requires its own LCA posting. Confirm with your employer before filing whether remote or client-site work is involved, since undisclosed worksites are a common compliance gap in DOL audits.
Time your filing around the cap and premium processing
H-1B cap petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date. If your current work authorization runs out before October, ask your employer to file with premium processing through USCIS to get a decision within 15 business days.

Find Master Data Management JobsMaster Data Management H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Master Data Management role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, MDM roles qualify when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as computer science, information systems, or data engineering. USCIS evaluates the job duties, not just the title. If your role involves data governance frameworks, master data architecture, or enterprise data modeling, it meets the specialty occupation standard, but your employer's job description must reflect those technical requirements clearly.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for MDM roles?
Financial services, healthcare systems, retail, and large enterprise technology firms are the most active sponsors for MDM positions because their regulatory and operational complexity creates sustained demand for data governance. You can find employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history in these sectors on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for companies that have sponsored roles in data management and information systems.
Can I switch employers on H-1B and keep my MDM role classification?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 allows you to change employers after your petition has been pending for 180 days, provided the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. For MDM professionals, moving between data governance, data architecture, or information management roles at a new employer generally qualifies, but your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before or when you start.
What happens if my MDM role involves consulting at client sites?
Third-party placement or consulting arrangements require additional documentation. Your employer must demonstrate it maintains control over your work and that a bona fide employer-employee relationship exists. Each client worksite also requires a separate LCA posting. USCIS scrutinizes consulting arrangements carefully, so your petition should include end-client letters, project details, and evidence of employer control such as performance reviews and the right to terminate your assignment.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement affect MDM job offers?
Your employer must pay you at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and the county where you work, certified on the LCA before filing your H-1B petition. MDM roles typically fall under database administrators or computer and information systems managers, which carry different wage levels depending on experience tier. Use the OFLC Wage Search to confirm the applicable wage floor for your specific location before accepting an offer.
