Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
Care Navigator roles can be filed under social work or nursing SOC codes. Confirm your degree field directly maps to the job description before applying, since a mismatch is the most common RFE trigger for this title.
Look up prevailing wages before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to find the Level I through Level IV wage for your specific SOC code and metropolitan area. Your offered salary must meet the certified LCA wage, and going in underprepared costs you leverage at the offer stage.
Target employers already filing LCAs for this role
Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history specifically for care coordination and navigator roles, so you're applying to organizations that have already cleared the DOL compliance steps for this job.
Prioritize cap-exempt employers to skip the lottery
Nonprofit hospitals, federally qualified health centers, and university health systems are often cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B petition bypasses the annual 85,000-slot lottery entirely. Focus your search on these employer types to eliminate lottery risk.
Get your credentials evaluated before the offer stage
If your nursing or social work degree is from outside the U.S., obtain a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization before your employer files the LCA. USCIS scrutinizes foreign degree equivalency for clinical roles, and delays here can push your start date past the October 1 cap date.
Clarify who covers premium processing in your offer
USCIS premium processing shortens adjudication to 15 business days. Confirm in writing whether your employer covers this fee, since Care Navigator roles often have urgent hiring timelines tied to patient caseload requirements that make standard processing risky.
H-1B Visa Care Navigator: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Care Navigator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Care Navigator qualifies as a specialty occupation when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as social work, public health, or nursing. Employers typically file under SOC code 21-1094 or 29-1141. If the job description accepts any bachelor's degree regardless of field, USCIS may issue an RFE challenging specialty occupation status, so the posting language matters.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Care Navigator positions?
Large health systems, managed care organizations, insurance companies with care management divisions, and federally qualified health centers are the most consistent sponsors. Many of these employers are cap-exempt nonprofits or government-affiliated entities, which means your petition bypasses the H-1B lottery. You can find employers with verified LCA filing history for this role on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement apply to Care Navigator roles?
Your employer must certify through the DOL that your offered salary meets the prevailing wage for the specific SOC code and work location listed on the LCA. Care Navigator roles are filed under different SOC codes depending on the clinical discipline, and the prevailing wage varies by level and metropolitan area. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the applicable wage before you receive an offer.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Care Navigator employer without losing status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition, as long as your prior status was maintained and you're moving to a role in the same or a related specialty occupation. Your new employer files a new I-129 and LCA. You don't need to wait for USCIS approval to begin work after the transfer petition is received.
What documentation should I prepare to support an H-1B petition for a Care Navigator role?
You'll need official transcripts showing a degree in a qualifying field, a credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S., any relevant state licensure or certification such as an LSW, LCSW, or RN license, and employment verification letters from prior Care Navigator or case management roles. Your employer's attorney will also need a detailed job description that establishes the specialty occupation requirement for USCIS review.
