Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree to directly relate to HVAC project management. Mechanical engineering, construction management, or building systems degrees are the strongest fit. A general business degree alone may trigger an RFE, so gather transcripts that show relevant coursework before applying.
Target MEP contractors with LCA filing history
Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing contractors file LCAs far more consistently for HVAC Project Manager roles than general contractors do. Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified H-1B filing history in the construction and facilities sectors before reaching out.
Check prevailing wage using OFLC Wage Search
Your offered salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for HVAC Project Manager in the specific metro where the work is performed. Run the OFLC Wage Search using SOC code 11-9021 before negotiating your offer so you can spot underpaying employers early.
Clarify worksite location before the LCA is filed
HVAC Project Managers frequently move between jobsites. If your work spans multiple locations in different metro areas, your employer may need to file amended LCAs for each area. Confirm this with your employer before I-129 filing to avoid compliance problems during your first year.
Time your application around the cap-subject lottery
Cap-subject H-1B registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, confirm your OPT end date and whether cap-gap protection applies so you and your employer can plan the I-129 filing timeline without a gap in work authorization.
Use O*NET to build your specialty occupation case
USCIS scrutinizes whether HVAC Project Manager is a true specialty occupation. Pull the O*NET occupation profile for Construction Manager (SOC 11-9021) and share it with your employer's attorney. It documents the degree requirement directly and strengthens the petition against RFEs.
H-1B Visa Hvac Project Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an HVAC Project Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as mechanical engineering, construction management, or building systems technology. Roles focused purely on field supervision or trade coordination without a degree requirement may not qualify. Your employer should document in the I-129 petition why the role requires specialized theoretical knowledge.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for HVAC Project Managers?
MEP contractors, mechanical contracting firms, facilities management companies, and large commercial construction groups are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this title. Universities and hospital systems with in-house facilities departments also file regularly. Use Migrate Mate to identify employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history specifically for HVAC and construction management roles before you apply.
Can my employer file an H-1B if I'll be working at multiple client jobsites?
Yes, but multi-site work creates compliance obligations. Your employer must post the LCA notice at each controlled worksite and may need to file amended petitions if a new worksite falls in a different metropolitan statistical area with a different prevailing wage. Clarify your expected jobsite rotation with your employer's attorney before the I-129 is submitted to USCIS.
What happens to my H-1B status if my employer loses a project contract mid-visa?
Your H-1B is tied to your sponsoring employer, not the specific project. If your employer remains in operation and continues to employ you, your status is unaffected even if the project ends. If your employment is terminated, you have a 60-day grace period under USCIS rules to find a new H-1B sponsor, change status, or depart the U.S.
Is an H-1B visa required if I already hold a valid TN or L-1 visa as an HVAC Project Manager?
Not necessarily. TN visa status is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering and management categories. L-1 visaA is an option if you're transferring within a multinational company. H-1B is the path for most other nationalities or when TN visa and L-1 don't fit your situation. USCIS guidance covers which status best matches your employer's relationship with you.
