Job Description
Albemarle is hiring for an E&I Project Specialist. This position is based out of the Kings Mountain, NC site but will also support the Silver Peak, NV site, with field presence as needed during construction and startup activities.
The E&I Project Specialist is a project execution role supporting Albemarle’s US Energy Storage capital portfolio. This position provides electrical and instrumentation (E&I) design development and field execution leadership for site capital projects, ensuring systems are safely installed, commissioned, and turned over to operations.
This role functions as a hybrid between design support and field supervision—developing construction-ready deliverables while overseeing contractors performing installation, checkout, and startup of E&I systems. The position emphasizes constructability, installation quality, and field coordination and requires strong hands-on industrial E&I experience.
The successful candidate brings practical expertise in industrial electrical and instrumentation systems, with demonstrated ability to translate design intent into executable field work, manage contractor performance, and drive safe, high-quality project delivery.
What You Will Do
Project Execution & Field Leadership
- Support delivery of E&I scope across capital projects from design through construction, commissioning, and handover
- Provide field leadership during construction, including contractor oversight, work coordination, and installation verification
- Ensure all work is executed in accordance with project scope, site standards, and safety requirements
- Serve as the primary E&I field point-of-contact for project teams, contractors, and operations
- Identify and resolve field issues, including constructability challenges and design gaps
E& I Design Development & Construction Packages
- Develop construction work packages to support contractor execution, including:
- Location plans and routing drawings
- Installation details and termination drawings
- Instrument indexes, loop diagrams, and I/O lists
- Scope of work documentation for contractors
- Support development of P&IDs, control strategies, and system designs in coordination with engineering
- Ensure designs are practical, constructible, and aligned with standards and specifications
Equipment Specification & Procurement Support
- Specify and support procurement of instrumentation and electrical equipment, including:
- Process instrumentation (flow, pressure, level, analyzers, control valves)
- Electrical equipment (lighting, transformers, MCCs, VFDs, motor control systems)
- Coordinate with procurement and vendors to ensure complete and accurate technical scope
- Review vendor submittals for alignment with project and site requirements
Installation, Commissioning & Startup
- Lead or support installation, checkout, and commissioning of new E&I systems
- Coordinate loop checks, system testing, and functional verification
- Support troubleshooting and optimization of installed systems during startup
- Ensure proper documentation, punch list closure, and turnover to operations
Planning, Estimating & Coordination
- Support project planning activities including estimating, scheduling, and work sequencing
- Participate in constructability reviews and contribute to execution planning
- Coordinate across disciplines (mechanical, civil, process, operations) to ensure alignment of E&I scope
Safety & Compliance
- Champion safety-first execution by leading safety tailgates and reinforcing safe work practices
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC, etc.)
- Support hazard identification efforts and ensure safe installation and startup of systems
What You Bring
Required:
Education
- Technical training, associate degree, or equivalent practical experience in Electrical, Instrumentation, or related field
Experience
- 10–20+ years of experience in industrial plant environments with hands-on E&I responsibilities
- Strong background in instrumentation installation, electrical systems, and process control environments
- Experience supporting capital projects, maintenance projects, or construction activities
- Demonstrated experience overseeing contractors and coordinating field execution
Technical Skills
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical drawings, and control system documentation
- Strong knowledge of:
- Process instrumentation and control systems
- Low- and medium-voltage electrical systems
- Motor control systems, MCCs, and VFDs
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC)
- Proficiency with standard business and documentation tools (Excel, Word, SAP or equivalent)
Leadership & Interpersonal
- Strong field leadership presence with ability to direct and coordinate contractor activities
- Effective communicator across engineering, construction, and operations teams
- Team-oriented with a strong customer focus and commitment to project outcomes
- Practical problem solver with ability to make timely, field-driven decisions

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Project Specialist
Verify your degree field matches the role
USCIS requires your degree to relate specifically to project management or a directly connected discipline. A general business degree often passes, but a fine arts degree won't support a Project Specialist petition, even with years of relevant experience.
Pull the O*NET profile before applying
The O*NET classification for Project Specialist roles maps the required knowledge areas USCIS officers reference when evaluating specialty occupation status. Align your resume and cover letter to those same knowledge domains to strengthen the employer's petition.
Target employers with active LCA filing histories
Use Migrate Mate to filter Project Specialist openings by employers who have filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications for this occupation code, so you're only spending time on companies with a documented sponsorship track record.
Ask about project classification during offer negotiation
Project Specialist roles vary from construction and IT to healthcare and government contracting. The employer's SOC code on your LCA determines which prevailing wage level DOL certifies, so confirm your job duties and title are classified correctly before signing an offer.
File the LCA under the correct work location
If your Project Specialist role involves multiple client sites or remote work across state lines, your employer must file a separate LCA for each worksite location. A single-location LCA won't cover travel-heavy project assignments, which can trigger compliance issues at renewal.
Use the OFLC Wage Search to validate your offer
Before your employer finalizes the H-1B petition, run your job title and worksite ZIP code through the OFLC Wage Search to confirm the offered wage meets the prevailing wage for your level. A wage below the certified level is grounds for a USCIS denial.
H-1B Visa Project Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer documents the role. USCIS evaluates whether the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Project Specialist roles that are tied to engineering, IT, finance, or healthcare operations typically qualify, but broadly defined coordination roles without a degree requirement in the job description can draw a Request for Evidence.
How do I find employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas for Project Specialists?
Migrate Mate shows verified LCA filing history by occupation code, so you can identify which companies have filed H-1B petitions for Project Specialist or closely related roles. This is more reliable than asking recruiters, since you're looking at actual DOL filing records rather than self-reported sponsorship policies.
Can I switch from OPT to H-1B while working as a Project Specialist?
Yes. Your employer files the H-1B petition before April 1 for an October 1 start date. If you're on STEM OPT, your cap-gap protection extends your work authorization through September 30 if your petition is timely filed and pending. Confirm your OPT end date and STEM extension status with your DSO early so there's no gap in authorization.
What happens to my H-1B if I'm reassigned to a different project or client site?
A significant change in job duties, location, or employer entity can require an amended H-1B petition before the change takes effect. Moving to a new worksite in a different metropolitan area almost always requires a new LCA. Your employer's immigration counsel should assess any material change before you start the new assignment.
Does working as a contractor or on a project basis affect H-1B eligibility?
Contract-based Project Specialist roles are eligible for H-1B sponsorship, but USCIS scrutinizes staffing and consulting arrangements more closely. The key question is whether the end client or the sponsoring employer controls your day-to-day work. If the end client directs your work and the sponsor is acting as a staffing intermediary, USCIS may issue an RFE challenging employer-employee relationship.
