Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree to directly relate to the IT Support Engineer role. A general business degree may not qualify. Pull the O*NET profile for this occupation to confirm the typical education requirements before applying.
Target employers enrolled in E-Verify
STEM OPT and cap-gap extensions require E-Verify enrollment from your employer. For IT Support Engineer roles, prioritize companies that already participate, since retroactive enrollment delays your authorization start date.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating an offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for IT Support Engineers in your work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search by SOC code and metro area before you accept any offer.
Use Migrate Mate to find LCA-verified employers
Many IT support postings come from employers with no H-1B filing history. Search Migrate Mate to filter companies by verified LCA filings for this specific role, so you're only applying where sponsorship is already established.
Clarify worksite location before the LCA is filed
IT Support Engineers often work across multiple offices or client sites. Each worksite requires its own prevailing wage determination. Ask your employer to confirm which locations will appear on the LCA before the DOL filing is submitted.
Start the H-1B process before your OPT end date
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed for the October 1 start date. If your OPT expires before then, your employer needs to file early enough to cover the gap. Confirm the timeline with HR at the offer stage, not after.
H-1B Visa IT Support Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Support Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. USCIS requires that the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field like computer science or information systems. If the job description accepts any degree or lists the degree as preferred rather than required, USCIS may issue an RFE challenging specialty occupation status. Ask to review the LCA job description before signing your offer.
Which employers typically sponsor H-1B visas for IT Support Engineers?
Enterprise technology companies, large healthcare systems, financial institutions, and managed service providers file LCAs for IT Support Engineer roles most consistently. Smaller companies sponsor less frequently because the cost and process are proportionally larger for them. Use Migrate Mate to search by employer and role to see which companies have active LCA filing history for this specific job title.
Can my employer place me at a client site on an H-1B as an IT Support Engineer?
Yes, but each third-party worksite requires a separate prevailing wage determination and the LCA must list all worksites where you'll work for more than five consecutive workdays. USCIS scrutinizes third-party placement arrangements closely for IT roles, so your employer needs to document that they control your day-to-day work, not the client.
What happens to my H-1B if I move from one IT Support Engineer role to another employer?
You need an H-1B transfer, which means your new employer files a new I-129 petition before your last day at the current employer. Under portability rules, you can start the new job once USCIS receives the transfer petition, even before it's approved, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've been maintaining valid status.
Does the H-1B cap apply to IT Support Engineer positions at universities or nonprofits?
Cap-exempt employers, including universities, affiliated nonprofits, and certain government research organizations, can file H-1B petitions year-round without going through the lottery. IT Support Engineer roles at these institutions are fully eligible. If your current employer is cap-subject and you're not selected in the lottery, targeting a cap-exempt employer is one path to getting an H-1B without waiting for the next registration cycle.
