Align your credentials to SOC codes
Infrastructure Project Manager roles map to multiple SOC codes depending on emphasis. Pull your target job's O*NET profile to confirm the degree field your employer must cite on the LCA, then match your transcripts and resume to that classification before applying.
Target cap-exempt employers strategically
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated entities can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery. Infrastructure roles in higher-ed IT and federally funded labs often fall under this exemption, letting you start without waiting for the April registration window.
Use Migrate Mate to filter LCA-filing employers
Search Infrastructure Project Manager roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have certified LCAs for this title. That filing history confirms an employer already understands the H-1B process for your specific role, cutting negotiation time significantly.
Request prevailing wage documentation early
Your employer must certify your wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage before USCIS approves the petition. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your job title and work location before the offer stage so you can identify any gaps before the LCA is filed.
Clarify PMP certification status in your petition
If your employer lists PMP or similar certifications as required on the job posting, USCIS may scrutinize whether the role truly requires a specialty degree. Ensure your offer letter and the supporting evidence tie the position's complexity to your bachelor's or higher degree, not just certifications.
Negotiate petition filing before your 60-day grace period ends
If you're between employers on H-1B, you have a 60-day grace period after your last day. Infrastructure roles often involve long hiring cycles, so confirm your prospective employer can file the H-1B transfer petition within that window before you accept an offer.
H-1B Visa Infrastructure Project Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Infrastructure Project Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as computer science, information systems, civil engineering, or a related discipline. USCIS evaluates each petition individually, so your employer's job description must demonstrate that the role's complexity and responsibility require that specific degree, not just general business or management experience.
Which industries hire Infrastructure Project Managers on H-1B sponsorship most frequently?
Technology companies, telecommunications carriers, large financial institutions, construction and engineering firms, and cloud infrastructure providers are among the most consistent H-1B filers for this role. Federal contractors and higher-education IT departments also hire regularly, with the added benefit that some qualify as cap-exempt employers. Browse verified sponsors on Migrate Mate to identify active filers by industry.
Can my employer file my H-1B petition concurrently with an EB-2 or EB-3 green card application?
Yes. Concurrent filing of an I-140 immigrant petition alongside your H-1B is permitted and common for Infrastructure Project Managers in long-term roles. Filing early matters because employment-based priority dates for some countries can involve multi-year waits. Your employer's immigration counsel typically coordinates both filings, but you should raise the timeline with HR during the offer stage.
What happens to my H-1B status if my infrastructure project ends and the employer wants to change my role?
A material change in job duties, location, or employer entity typically requires an amended H-1B petition filed with USCIS before the change takes effect. If your role shifts from hands-on project delivery to a primarily supervisory or general management function, USCIS may also scrutinize whether the specialty occupation requirement is still met, so document the technical scope of any new responsibilities carefully.
How does the H-1B lottery affect timelines for Infrastructure Project Manager hiring?
Cap-subject H-1B petitions are subject to the annual lottery, with registration opening in March and employment start dates no earlier than October 1. Employers planning to hire Infrastructure Project Managers through the cap must register in spring for a fall start. If you're already on H-1B with another employer, a transfer petition can be filed year-round without waiting for the lottery.
