Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in LPTA
Verify your LPTA credential meets H-1B requirements
USCIS requires your foreign PTA credential to be evaluated as equivalent to a U.S. associate degree in physical therapy assisting. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before applying, since missing documentation is the most common RFE trigger for LPTA petitions.
Check active LCA filings by employer using OFLC Wage Search
Employers who've filed certified LCAs for LPTA roles have demonstrated both sponsorship intent and prevailing wage compliance. Cross-reference DOL disclosure data to identify healthcare systems and outpatient networks actively sponsoring, not just those claiming openness to it.
Target facilities enrolled in E-Verify first
E-Verify enrollment is required for STEM OPT employers, but it also signals that a healthcare employer has the HR infrastructure to manage work authorization compliance. Skilled nursing facilities and hospital networks already enrolled in E-Verify typically move faster through the LCA and I-129 process.
Use Migrate Mate to filter LPTA roles by sponsorship history
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for physical therapist assistant roles, so you're applying to facilities that have sponsored before rather than guessing from job postings that mention visa openness without evidence.
Negotiate petition timing before accepting an offer
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed for an October 1 start, so if you're not cap-exempt, your offer letter needs to reflect that timeline. Confirm with the employer whether their facility qualifies as a cap-exempt nonprofit or government entity before signing anything.
Understand how the LCA wage level affects your offer
USCIS requires your offered wage to meet the DOL prevailing wage for LPTA roles in your specific metropolitan area. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage tiers for SOC code 31-2021 before comparing offers across different states or metro areas.

Find LPTA JobsLPTA H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an LPTA role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, USCIS generally recognizes Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant positions as specialty occupations because the role requires at least an associate degree in physical therapy assisting as a minimum entry requirement. The key is that the degree must be in a directly related field. A general associate degree in an unrelated subject won't satisfy the specialty occupation standard, and your employer's job description must reflect the degree requirement explicitly.
Can a foreign-trained PTA get H-1B sponsorship if their degree is from outside the U.S.?
Yes, but your foreign PTA credential must be evaluated as equivalent to a U.S. associate degree in physical therapy assisting by a NACES-approved credential evaluation agency. USCIS reviews that evaluation as part of the I-129 petition. You'll also need to have passed the NPTE and hold a valid state PTA license, since USCIS requires you to meet all standard licensure requirements at the time of filing.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for LPTA positions?
Hospital systems, outpatient rehabilitation clinics, skilled nursing facilities, and home health agencies are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for LPTA roles. Nonprofit hospitals and government-affiliated healthcare facilities may qualify as cap-exempt, which means they can file H-1B petitions year-round rather than waiting for the annual lottery window. You can find employers with verified LCA filing history for this role on Migrate Mate.
What happens to my H-1B if my employer loses my state PTA license renewal?
Your H-1B status is tied to both your employer and your ability to perform the job's core duties, which requires a valid state license for LPTAs. If your license lapses, USCIS considers you unable to maintain the specialty occupation, which puts your status at risk. You must keep your license current in every state where you practice, and if you move to a new state, your employer must file an amended H-1B petition with an updated LCA reflecting the new work location.
Does switching from a per diem LPTA contract to a full-time role require a new H-1B petition?
It depends on whether the new role is with the same employer and in the same location. A material change in employment terms, including a shift from part-time to full-time status or a change in worksite, typically requires your employer to file an amended I-129 with USCIS and a new certified LCA with DOL. Failing to amend when required is a compliance violation that can affect future immigration benefits, so confirm with your employer's immigration contact before the change takes effect.
