Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Cancer Registrar
Verify your CTR credential before applying
USCIS adjudicators scrutinize whether Cancer Registrar roles meet the specialty occupation standard. Holding a Certified Tumor Registrar credential from NCRA strengthens your petition by demonstrating the role requires specialized theoretical knowledge, not just on-the-job training.
Target NCI-designated cancer centers first
NCI-designated cancer centers and large academic medical systems file H-1B petitions most consistently for registry staff. Their compliance teams are already familiar with the LCA and I-129 process, which reduces delays caused by employer inexperience.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter Cancer Registrar openings on Migrate Mate by employers with confirmed H-1B filing history. This surfaces hospital systems that have actually sponsored this role, not just employers who list visa sponsorship as a checkbox on job postings.
Pull the prevailing wage before salary negotiations
Look up the SOC code 29-2099 wage level for your metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before your offer call. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage, so knowing Level II versus Level III thresholds gives you a concrete floor to negotiate from.
Confirm the employer files before the April 1 deadline
H-1B petitions for October 1 start dates must be filed by April 1 after lottery selection. Ask your prospective employer during the offer stage whether they use premium processing and who handles their immigration filings, so you aren't caught without status if they miss the window.
Request a cap-exempt filing if the hospital qualifies
Hospitals affiliated with a university or nonprofit research institution may qualify as cap-exempt employers, meaning your H-1B petition bypasses the lottery entirely. Ask HR directly whether their entity holds cap-exempt status under INA Section 214(g)(5)(A) before assuming you need to wait for April registration.
H-1B Visa Cancer Registrar: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Cancer Registrar role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, Cancer Registrar positions typically qualify because USCIS requires the role to normally demand at least a bachelor's degree in a specific specialty. Employers strengthen the petition by documenting that the position requires health information management, oncology data science, or a closely related degree field, and by noting that the CTR credential is standard in the industry.
Which employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Cancer Registrars?
NCI-designated cancer centers, academic medical centers, and large multi-hospital health systems are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for registry roles. Smaller community hospitals sponsor less frequently because their legal and compliance teams handle fewer immigration filings. You can browse employers with verified H-1B filing history for this role on Migrate Mate.
How does the DOL prevailing wage apply to Cancer Registrar H-1B petitions?
Before filing your I-129 petition, your employer must obtain a certified LCA from DOL confirming the offered wage meets the prevailing wage for the Cancer Registrar SOC code in your geographic area. You can look up current prevailing wage levels by metro area using the OFLC Wage Search. The wage level assigned, typically Level II or III, affects both your offer and the LCA.
Can a Cancer Registrar change employers mid-H-1B without losing status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as that employer files a new I-129 petition on your behalf, provided your current H-1B was previously approved and you haven't violated status. You don't need to wait for USCIS to approve the new petition before starting, as long as it's filed while you're in valid status.
Does the CTR credential affect H-1B approval odds for Cancer Registrar roles?
Holding a Certified Tumor Registrar credential from NCRA materially strengthens the specialty occupation argument in your H-1B petition. USCIS may issue an RFE if the employer's job description doesn't clearly require a specific degree field. The CTR, combined with a job description that ties duties to health information science or oncology informatics, reduces that risk considerably.
