Verify your degree field aligns precisely
USCIS requires your degree to directly relate to the Wellness Director role, not just health broadly. A degree in exercise science supports a corporate wellness program; a business degree alone typically won't. Cross-check your transcript against the job's stated educational requirement before applying.
Target cap-exempt employers first
Universities, nonprofit hospitals, and qualifying research institutions can sponsor you outside the annual H-1B cap and lottery. Wellness Directors at these organizations can start any time of year, not just October 1. Prioritize these employers if you need faster or more predictable sponsorship timing.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsors
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with active H-1B LCA filings for Wellness Director and related titles. This filters out organizations that list the role but have no documented sponsorship history, saving you outreach time on employers unlikely to file.
Pull prevailing wage data before negotiating
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your location and job title. Run your target city and SOC code through OFLC Wage Search before salary discussions so you know the floor. An offer below that level legally cannot proceed to LCA filing.
Confirm the LCA job title matches your actual duties
Wellness Director covers a wide range of scopes, from fitness center oversight to enterprise well-being strategy. The Labor Condition Application must reflect what you'll actually do. A mismatch between your offer letter duties and the LCA job description is a common source of USCIS Requests for Evidence.
Document your specialized credentials before filing
Certifications like CHES, CWWPM, or WELCOA fellowship strengthen the specialty-occupation argument for this role. Gather your credential certificates, CEU transcripts, and any published programs you've designed. Your employer's attorney will need these to build the H-1B petition support letter.
H-1B Visa Wellness Director: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Wellness Director role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. USCIS evaluates whether the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Wellness Director roles tied to enterprise health strategy, clinical wellness program design, or population health management typically meet the threshold. Roles framed primarily as fitness facility management may face more scrutiny without a strong degree-requirement argument.
Which types of employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Wellness Directors?
Hospital systems, university campus health departments, large self-insured corporations, and integrated health plans are the most active sponsors. Nonprofit hospitals and universities are cap-exempt, meaning they can file year-round without entering the lottery. Browse Migrate Mate to see which employers have filed LCAs for Wellness Director and adjacent titles in your target location.
How does the H-1B lottery affect my timeline as a Wellness Director candidate?
If your target employer is a for-profit company subject to the cap, your petition must be selected in the annual lottery before USCIS can adjudicate it. Registration typically opens in March, with an October 1 start date if selected. Cap-exempt employers, including universities and qualifying nonprofits, bypass the lottery entirely and can sponsor you at any point in the year.
Can my employer use a working title different from 'Wellness Director' on the H-1B petition?
The LCA and H-1B petition must reflect the actual job duties and the SOC code that best describes the position, not necessarily the internal title. Wellness Directors are commonly filed under Health Education Specialists or Health Services Managers depending on scope. The O*NET profile for the assigned SOC code should align with what you'll genuinely be doing, or USCIS may issue a Request for Evidence.
What happens to my H-1B status if I move from one wellness employer to another?
H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer once they file a new H-1B petition, without waiting for approval, provided your prior petition was approved and you've been in valid H-1B status. Your new employer must file before your current status expires. The petition must cover the same or a similar occupational classification as your original approval.
