H-1B Visa Cytotechnologist Jobs
Cytotechnologists qualify as H-1B specialty occupation workers because the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in cytotechnology or a closely related biological science. Most hospital systems, reference labs, and cancer centers file H-1B petitions directly, and the 65,000 annual cap applies unless your employer holds university or nonprofit research exempt status.

Target cap-exempt employers first
University hospitals, nonprofit research labs, and government health agencies are exempt from the 65,000 H-1B cap. These employers can file your petition any time of year, not just during the April lottery window.
Search LCA filings for cytotechnology roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified H-1B LCA filings for cytotechnologist positions, so you're applying to labs and health systems that have already committed to sponsoring this exact role, not just open to it in theory.
Confirm the offered wage meets DOL prevailing levels
Your employer must certify your salary meets the prevailing wage for your location and experience level before DOL approves the LCA. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check Level I through Level IV wages for SOC code 29-2011 in your target metro.
Ask about premium processing during offer negotiations
Standard H-1B adjudication can run three to six months. If your employer files with USCIS premium processing, the petition receives a decision within 15 business days. Raise this during the offer stage, not after signing.
Align your start date with the October 1 cap-subject timeline
Cap-subject H-1B approvals take effect October 1, the start of the federal fiscal year. If your petition is selected in the April lottery, you can't begin H-1B employment until that date, so plan your OPT or current status end date accordingly.

Find Cytotechnologist JobsCytotechnologist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a cytotechnologist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Cytotechnologist positions require at least a bachelor's degree in cytotechnology, biology, or a closely related life science, which satisfies the USCIS specialty occupation standard. Most employers also require CT(ASCP) board certification, which further supports the specialty occupation argument in the H-1B petition. Routine generalist lab assistant roles do not meet this bar, but credentialed cytotechnologist positions consistently do.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for cytotechnologists?
Academic medical centers, large reference laboratories, NCI-designated cancer centers, and hospital systems with pathology departments file H-1B petitions for cytotechnologists most frequently. Smaller community hospitals sometimes sponsor as well, but they tend to prefer candidates already authorized to work. Use Migrate Mate to search employers with confirmed LCA filing history for cytotechnology roles in your target location.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new cytotechnologist job without losing status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the new H-1B transfer petition is filed with USCIS, as long as your prior H-1B was approved and you've maintained valid status. The new employer files a new I-129 petition, and you don't need to wait for approval before your start date, provided the petition is non-frivolous.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for cytotechnologist H-1B petitions?
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for the cytotechnologist role in the specific geographic location where you'll work. Wages are tiered from Level I through Level IV based on experience and complexity. Your employer determines the appropriate level and certifies it in the LCA before filing with USCIS. You can check current wage levels by searching SOC code 29-2011 in the OFLC Wage Search.
Does cytotechnology experience from another country count toward H-1B eligibility?
Foreign cytotechnology credentials and work experience can support an H-1B petition, but USCIS typically requires a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization to establish U.S. degree equivalency. If your foreign degree is a three-year program, the evaluator may need to combine it with relevant work experience to meet the bachelor's-level equivalency standard. CT(ASCP) or IAC certification earned in the U.S. significantly strengthens the petition.
