Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Clinical Social Work
Verify your MSW meets specialty occupation standards
USCIS requires your degree to directly relate to the clinical social work duties in the job description. A generalist MSW paired with a clinical concentration and state licensure strengthens the specialty occupation argument considerably.
Target healthcare systems with established H-1B programs
Hospital networks and federally qualified health centers file H-1Bs for clinical social workers far more consistently than private practices. Focus your search on employers with in-house HR immigration teams, not those outsourcing sponsorship decisions to hiring managers.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter clinical social work roles by employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history. Migrate Mate surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data so you can see which organizations have sponsored this exact occupation code before applying.
Secure state licensure before the H-1B start date
Most H-1B petitions for clinical social workers require you to hold or be eligible for the state clinical license. If your license is pending, ask the employer to document licensure-in-progress status in the petition support letter to satisfy USCIS.
Confirm the prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Run your job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search to check the DOL wage level the employer must certify on the LCA. Accepting a wage below the certified level creates compliance risk for both you and the employer.
Ask employers about cap-exempt filing options
Nonprofits affiliated with universities or research institutions can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap, with no lottery and year-round filing windows. Clinical social work roles at affiliated hospital systems or academic medical centers often qualify.

Find Clinical Social Work JobsClinical Social Work H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does clinical social work qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Clinical social work qualifies because the role normally requires a master's degree in social work as the standard minimum for entry. USCIS looks at whether the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific specialty. An MSW with a clinical concentration satisfies that requirement, particularly when state licensure as an LCSW or LMSW is also required for the role.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for clinical social workers?
Hospital systems, academic medical centers, federally qualified health centers, and large nonprofit behavioral health organizations are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for clinical social workers. Smaller private practices rarely sponsor because of the administrative cost and complexity. You can find employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for clinical social work roles on Migrate Mate, filtered by occupation and location.
Can I work as a clinical social worker on H-1B before getting my state license?
It depends on the state and the employer's petition language. Some states allow associate or provisional licensure that satisfies the H-1B specialty occupation requirement while you complete supervised hours toward full licensure. USCIS requires the employer to document that you meet the licensing standard at the time of filing, so the petition support letter needs to address your licensure status explicitly.
How does the H-1B lottery affect clinical social work job seekers?
Most clinical social work H-1B petitions go through the annual cap lottery held each spring for an October 1 start date. However, positions at nonprofit hospitals affiliated with universities or government research institutions can file as cap-exempt year-round. If your target employer qualifies for cap exemption, you can start at any point in the year without waiting for a lottery selection.
What documentation does a clinical social worker need for H-1B sponsorship?
You'll need an MSW degree and any clinical licensure documents, including transcripts and a credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S. The employer files Form I-129 supported by an LCA certified by the DOL, a detailed job description establishing specialty occupation, and evidence of your qualifications. If your degree title doesn't explicitly say clinical social work, the employer should include a professional evaluation connecting your specialization to the role.
