Ultrasound Technologists use imaging devices that emit sound waves to create an image that will help physicians assess and diagnose various conditions. There are different kinds of imaging devices; this includes ultrasounds, sonograms, and echocardiograms. Generally, sonographic imaging devices use a handheld probe, which is moved over the area being surveyed to create a two-dimensional or three-dimensional image. These devices can be used for therapy, diagnosis and even to guide interventional procedures like biopsies or draining fluid collections.

Verify your credential equivalency early
Foreign sonography credentials aren't automatically accepted by USCIS. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-recognized organization before applying, so your employer can document degree equivalency in the H-1B petition without delays.
Check employer E-Verify enrollment status
H-1B employers must be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask during the screening call, not after an offer. Unenrolled employers can't file your petition, and re-enrolling mid-process adds weeks to your timeline.
Target cap-exempt hospital systems first
Nonprofit hospitals and university-affiliated medical centers are exempt from the H-1B lottery. Filing with a cap-exempt employer means your petition can be submitted any time of year, skipping the March registration window entirely.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers with H-1B filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter ultrasound technologist roles by employers who have active DOL Labor Condition Application filings. This cuts research time and surfaces health systems already set up to sponsor your visa.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier for your specialty
Ultrasound technologists who specialize in cardiac, vascular, or OB/GYN sonography often fall under a higher wage tier. Run your job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search to confirm the wage level before negotiating your offer.
Request premium processing if your start date is fixed
If your OPT or prior status expires within months of an expected offer, ask your employer to file with USCIS premium processing. Standard adjudication can run three to six months, and premium processing typically resolves in 15 business days.
H-1B Visa Ultrasound Technologist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Ultrasound Technologist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS treats diagnostic medical sonography as a specialty occupation because it normally requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in the field. Employers document this in the H-1B petition using the job duties, the industry standard for the role, and your credentials. Roles requiring only an associate degree can face scrutiny, so your employer's attorney should address that directly if it applies.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for ultrasound technologists?
Large hospital networks, radiology groups, outpatient imaging centers, and academic medical centers are the most active sponsors. Nonprofit and university-affiliated health systems have a significant advantage: they're exempt from the H-1B annual cap, meaning they can file petitions year-round rather than competing in the April lottery. You can find employers with verified H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect my job search timeline as a sonographer?
For cap-subject employers, USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for a roughly two-week window. If selected, your employer can file your petition for an October 1 start date. That means a job offer in January may not result in authorized work for nine months or more. Targeting cap-exempt employers or employers who can bridge your status lets you start sooner.
What documents should I prepare before an employer files my H-1B petition?
Your employer will need your academic transcripts, any credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S., your ARDMS or similar certification, a copy of your passport, and evidence of your current immigration status. Gathering these before your offer is finalized prevents delays when your employer's attorney begins the Labor Condition Application filing with DOL.
Can I switch employers while on H-1B as an ultrasound technologist?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can begin working for a new employer as soon as the new petition is filed with USCIS, provided you've maintained valid status and the new role is in the same or a closely related occupational classification. Your new employer must file a new H-1B transfer petition before your last day at the previous job to preserve continuous authorization.
