Verify your degree field matches
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree and the Manager of Finance role. A finance, accounting, or economics degree satisfies this cleanly. An unrelated degree triggers RFE risk, so document any relevant coursework or certifications before applying.
Check employer LCA filings before applying
Search LCA disclosure data through the OFLC Wage Search to confirm an employer has filed for finance manager roles before. Repeat filers understand the process and rarely withdraw offers mid-petition, which matters when your status depends on a clean timeline.
Find verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Manager of Finance roles by employers with confirmed H-1B filing history. This cuts the time spent screening companies that won't sponsor, so you're only pursuing roles where sponsorship is already part of the hiring process.
Time your job search around the cap lottery
H-1B registration opens in March for an October 1 start. If you're on OPT, target employers willing to submit your petition by April 1. Finance managers hired after that window often can't start until the following fiscal year without a cap-exempt employer.
Confirm the offered wage meets prevailing levels
DOL sets four wage levels for each occupation and metro area. Before accepting an offer, cross-reference the role's SOC code and your work location using OFLC Wage Search. A Level I wage for a manager-level role can trigger a DOL audit or USCIS denial.
Request premium processing when timelines are tight
USCIS offers premium processing on I-129 petitions, returning a decision within 15 business days. Finance managers changing employers after a layoff should ask their new employer to elect premium processing to stay within the 60-day grace period.
H-1B Visa Manager Of Finance: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Manager of Finance role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies Manager of Finance positions as specialty occupations because the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a closely related field. The employer must document that the position is not open to candidates with unrelated degrees, which most corporate finance manager job descriptions already reflect.
How do I find employers actively sponsoring H-1B visas for finance manager roles?
Migrate Mate filters Manager of Finance listings by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history, so you can focus on companies that have sponsored the role before. You can also search DOL LCA disclosure data directly through OFLC Wage Search by SOC code 11-3031 to see which employers filed petitions in your target metro area.
What happens to my H-1B petition if my employer rescinds the offer after filing?
If the employer withdraws the petition before USCIS approves it, your H-1B is canceled and you revert to your previous status. If you're on OPT and within the 60-day grace period, you have limited time to find a new employer willing to file a new petition. Cap-exempt employers such as universities or nonprofit research institutions can file outside the annual lottery, which gives you more options.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new finance manager role at a different company?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 allows you to start working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed, not approved, provided your original H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days. The new employer must file a new I-129 petition with a certified LCA for the specific Manager of Finance position and location.
What wage level should a Manager of Finance H-1B petition reflect?
Most Manager of Finance roles are filed at DOL wage Levels III or IV, which reflect experienced and fully competent employees. Filing at Level I or II for a manager-level position creates audit exposure because DOL and USCIS scrutinize whether the offered wage matches the actual seniority and responsibilities of the role. Use OFLC Wage Search with SOC code 11-3031 and your work location to verify the prevailing wage before accepting an offer.
