Match your degree to the SOC code
News Reporters file under SOC code 27-3022. Your degree must be in journalism, communications, or a directly related field. A business or political science degree alone may trigger an RFE unless your coursework has a clear editorial focus.
Search LCA filings by news outlet type
Use Migrate Mate to filter H-1B sponsoring employers by the news reporter occupation code. Wire services, broadcast networks, and digital-native outlets file LCAs at different rates, so checking actual filing history narrows your target list fast.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Run your target metro and job title through the OFLC Wage Search before your offer stage. The LCA must certify your salary at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your location, and some smaller newsrooms underbid unintentionally.
Document your beat expertise with published clips
USCIS assesses specialty occupation partly through the complexity of the role. A portfolio showing sustained coverage of a specialized beat, such as financial markets, health policy, or foreign affairs, strengthens the employer's petition beyond a generic job description.
Ask about cap-exempt status at qualifying broadcasters
Public broadcasting organizations affiliated with universities may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, letting you file outside the annual lottery. Confirm the employer's affiliation status with their HR or legal team before assuming standard cap timelines apply.
Time your filing around the broadcast news hiring cycle
Many broadcast employers hire on contract cycles tied to ratings periods. An H-1B filed in April takes effect October 1, so offers made after January give your employer enough lead time to meet the USCIS regular processing window.

Find News Reporter JobsNews Reporter H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a News Reporter role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the employer requires at least a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a closely related field as a standard condition of employment. Roles described as requiring any bachelor's degree regardless of field can fail the specialty occupation test. The job posting and employer's internal hiring standards both factor into USCIS adjudication.
Which types of news organizations sponsor H-1B visas for reporters?
National broadcast networks, wire services, and large digital publishers file LCAs for reporter roles with some regularity. Smaller regional stations and print outlets sponsor less often, largely due to legal costs relative to payroll size. You can filter employers by actual LCA filing history on Migrate Mate rather than relying on company reputation alone.
Can a freelance or contract reporting arrangement support an H-1B petition?
No. H-1B status requires a formal employer-employee relationship where the sponsoring organization controls the work, sets the schedule, and issues a W-2. Freelance agreements and independent contractor arrangements don't satisfy USCIS requirements. If your current setup is contract-based, you'd need a staff position before a petition can be filed.
How does the H-1B lottery affect News Reporter job seekers?
Most commercial newsrooms are cap-subject employers, meaning your petition enters the annual lottery held each April for an October 1 start date. USCIS receives far more registrations than the 85,000 available slots, so selection isn't guaranteed. If you're not selected, cap-exempt employers like public broadcasters affiliated with universities offer an alternative path outside the lottery.
What credentials strengthen an H-1B petition for a journalism role?
A bachelor's or higher degree in journalism or communications is the baseline. Beyond that, published clips on a specialized beat, prior U.S. media internships on valid status, and language skills tied to a specific coverage need all help the employer build a stronger specialty occupation argument. O*NET lists the standard educational and skill requirements for the occupation, which employers often reference in their petition support letters.
