H-1B Visa Payroll Clerk Jobs
Payroll Clerk roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Employers file a Labor Condition Application certifying the prevailing wage before petitioning USCIS. Annual cap competition and per-country backlogs affect your timeline, so targeting employers with active LCA filing history matters.

Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree to directly relate to payroll functions. Accounting, finance, business administration, or human resources degrees are the strongest fit. A general business degree paired with payroll-specific coursework or certifications strengthens your petition against an RFE.
Filter employers using LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for Payroll Clerk or payroll-adjacent roles. Employers with recent LCA filings already understand the DOL certification process, which shortens your path from offer to petition.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Run your job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before your salary discussion. Your employer's LCA must certify wages at or above the prevailing rate for your SOC code and geographic area, so knowing the floor protects you from undershooting.
Get your O*NET SOC code right on the LCA
Payroll Clerk roles typically fall under the O*NET classification for Payroll and Timekeeping Clerks. Confirm with your employer that the SOC code on the LCA matches your actual duties, since a mismatch between the LCA occupation and the I-129 petition can trigger a USCIS RFE.
Request premium processing if your start date is tight
Standard H-1B adjudication runs several months, which can conflict with a specific start date your employer needs. Premium processing guarantees a USCIS decision within 15 business days. Raise this option during offer negotiations, as employers often agree when onboarding timelines are firm.

Find Payroll Clerk JobsPayroll Clerk H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Payroll Clerk role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. USCIS requires that the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Payroll Clerk roles qualify when the employer can demonstrate that tasks such as multi-state tax compliance, payroll system configuration, or benefits reconciliation require specialized accounting or finance knowledge, not just general clerical training.
Which employers typically sponsor H-1B visas for Payroll Clerk positions?
Large corporations, healthcare systems, and companies with complex multi-state payroll operations are most likely to sponsor because they have dedicated HR and legal infrastructure to manage the filing. Staffing firms and payroll outsourcing companies also sponsor when the role is direct hire. Search Migrate Mate to browse Payroll Clerk openings at employers with verified LCA filing history.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect Payroll Clerk candidates?
Most Payroll Clerk roles at private employers are subject to the annual H-1B cap of 65,000 regular slots and 20,000 master's cap slots. USCIS runs the lottery each March for an October 1 start date. Candidates with a U.S. master's degree get two chances in the draw. Roles at universities or nonprofit research institutions are cap-exempt and can file year-round.
What wage level should a Payroll Clerk H-1B petition use?
Most entry-level Payroll Clerk petitions are filed at DOL wage Level I or Level II, depending on the complexity of duties and supervision required. The employer determines the appropriate level when completing the LCA through the OFLC Wage Search. Understating the wage level relative to actual duties is a common RFE trigger, so the job description and wage level must be consistent.
Can I switch Payroll Clerk employers while on an H-1B?
Yes. Under AC21 portability, you can change employers once your I-140 has been approved and your H-1B has been valid for at least 180 days, provided the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. For an H-1B transfer without an approved I-140, your new employer files a new I-129 petition and you can start work once USCIS receives the petition, not after approval.
